reinstalling complete interior-Top down?

Recommended Posts

So it has been several years since I took the interior out of my MJ and I want to make sure that I put it back in the most efficient and effective order.  I have new headliner and carpet plus I think all of the interior trim panels are in good shape and ready to install.

  1. The upper A pillar trims (not the lower kick panels) seem to test fit just fine but it looks like the lower attachment screw-right around the middle of the dashboard up and down-needs to be installed with the dash out.  Is that true?
  2. Does the headliner need to be installed first-before the A and B pillar trims-in order to be the easiest install?

Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestions.

I haven't yet put my headliner in, but by the looks of it, it's best to put that in before the trim if even just for an easier install. In fact, I'm pretty sure very headliner I've dealt with had required the trim to be attached after the fact.

Install the lower panels from the front kick panels along the floor to the back first before you put the B pillar panels in. The B pillar panels sit on top of and outside of the lower panels.

I was able to put the a pillar trim in without removing the dash, just be very gentle as they are a bit fragile.

Yeah I test fitted the driver's side without damage but it looks like there is a screw that holds the A pillar trim to the body and it lines right up with the center line of the dash.  That's why I think the dash has to be backed out.  There's only one or maybe two other anchor points for that A pillar trim as far as I can see.

Great advice. Thanks!  I realized I hadn't identified the trim that goes under the door  in my pile of plastic so I took a better look and found both pieces.  Now what you said make perfect sense.

Headliner first. Then the rest. You might be able to get away with sliding the headliner around with the upper portion of the A and B pillar panels loose.

That's what I was figuring.  Since the rest of the cab is bare I won't need to worry about the tops of the pillar panels.  Thanks.

I've done the headliner with the A and B pillars just loose, it's doable, but it isn't fun.  Two people and some patience it will turn out.  It would be way easier to do with the A and B pillars removed.

Another tip, if you are putting sound deadening material like dynamat on the roof, avoid the center because that extra thickness near the center will force the headliner to sit down and a bit farther forward than it should.  I had covered my whole roof in it and it did make it more  challenging to fit the headliner.  Dynamat doesn't need to be placed everywhere anyway to reduce vibration in panels.

That’s assuring. I have to take my headliner out here soon and reglue my tweed back to the headliner. I hate taking the interior apart as basically everything is held in place by that damn back panel under the window. Thing is so fragile that it makes the thought of taking the interior apart a nightmare.
