Warren99 Posted June 12 Share Posted June 12 Putting a rear dana 44 from an XJ into my MJ. The pads are basically gone and the drums aint in the best shape either so I wanna just fully redo them all. The inside diamter of my drums are 9, the pads are 2.5 wide tho. I couldn't find anything stamped into the outside of the drum. Is it likely the right one or did they differ? Thanks That's a really odd bird you're describing. OEM D44 should have 10" drums but it is possible to swap 9" D35 hardware on to a D44. As the saying goes... "a lot can happen in 30 years." Best way to sort out what you have would be to find the part numbers on the backing plates. Quick question, are your drums smooth around the outside, or do they have cooling fins? DesertRat1991 Posted June 14 Share Posted June 14 Well, they don't look like 10" D44 drums. What is the part number on the backing plate? It should be visible in the area cicled below. You may also want to look for a 7 digit BOM number on your axle tube [XXXXXX-X]. That will tell us roughly what years/models your axle could be sourced from. Warren99 Posted June 15 Author Share Posted June 15 Well I got to cleaning it up and I'm gonna hopefully have it swapped by tn, once I we figure out this brake thing I’ll get the right rebuilt kit. In the meantime, I realized my non c clip Dana 35 has cooling fins, 10 inch drums and 1 3/4” pads, while like I said, the d44 has 9 inch drums with no fins, and 2.5” pads. Note the Dana 35 came off a Cherokee as well, not sure the year tho. In the pics the one inside is the Dana 35 and the one outside is the Dana 44. In like the 3rd to last pic I did find a code on the passenger side backing plate. Its hard to make out, looks like maybe “BH dq24” Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Warren99 Posted June 17 Author Share Posted June 17 Update, I went and picked up that dana 35 kit from summit this morning and got it all installed and so far all seems well, need to tighten up my parking brake cable still tho. So yeah I guess someone did put d35 brakes on it, but fine by me, maybe wayy into the future after my engine swap I'll do a rear disc conversion but I doubt I'll need it. ghetdjc320 Posted June 17 Share Posted June 17 From what I’ve gathered, the 10” brakes were both on the D35 and D44 up to 89. My 88 D35 (non c clip) had the 10” brakes. My 1991 D35 had the 9” brakes. My 1990 MJ had the 9” brakes. My 1997 TJ D44 has the 9” brakes and there is not even a 10” drum in any parts manual I’ve seen for the TJ. I was under the impression that the brakes on the XJ/MJ/YJ/TJ 44 were always larger than the D35 of the same year but this doesn’t seem to be the case.
