1988 Sport Truck Rescue

Recommended Posts

As I promised in the Facebook group, I am starting a build thread of this little truck I rescued on 2/4/2022

This is currently a 1988 4.0 AW4 2WD Sport Truck. It doesn't run and has a failed OBD2 swap that has been performed. It cranks but won't fire. I haven't dug to much into it, Was busy cleaning the mold, dirt and wasp nests off it today.

If anyone has any info on a 1996 XJ OBD2 swap into a MJ I would love to read it. Maybe figure out where they went wrong. I will search around the forum none the less though.

Here are the photos from filthy to clean.

Besides a small hole in the drivers floor pan right near the fuse block, This is the only real body damage.

Nice MJ and I’m envious of the 3/4 ton Yukon!

Thanks! I'm pretty sure the wife is going to steal this MJ for herself. I LOVE that Yukon. The 8.1 does consume a lot of fuel but it doesn't miss a beat towing anything.

Looks to be missing a map sensor to start.. :shhh: double check fuel air and spark systems, cps and tps common replacement sensors as well as oxygen sensor. Obd 2 setup should have a return line from rail back to tank.

Decent truck found there. Look forward to updates. Thanks for sharing your project adventure with us here. :grinyes:

Good catch on the map sensor! I don't have any power going to the fuel pump and I see a few connectors with a fair share of cut wires under the dash. Also injectors 4 and 5 have chewed through wires. I thankfully (I guess?) have owned a fair share of XJs so I can't wait to mess with this failed swap. Love getting things working correctly that others can't. Just torn now on what one of my comanches I'm going to 5.3 LS swap now.

Will keep this updated for sure, I'm spending more time on forums now and away from the meta verse (besides the CC Instagram and my own)

@MiNi Beast after investigating the wiring harness further, I found no evidence of a map sensor plug at all. The harness appears to be a factory one with no signs of anyone cutting it apart in the engine bay. Was there any year a 4.0 didn't have a MAP sensor? I know my 88, 89 MJs have them, Old 95 and 97 XJs have had them and have given me no start issues over the years.

It looks like the interior is 96 swapped but the drivetrain honestly looks like it's a 97+

The ecu looks like one from a later style xj with the metal case. The 96 used the plastic case for the ecu and one plug instead of 3? It has.

It might be the 97+ harness in the engine bay and 96 harness in the cab and they aren't compatible? Or someone has modified and done a really good job making it look factory

Should be on firewall for 96 xj and renix has one on the throttle body itself. You may have a renix setup yet with h.o head and block...:dunno:

It's not a Renix at all, I'm very familiar with the Renix system. Sadly, This is my 3rd MJ and my first one is still around. haha

Based on the throttle cable, that is most definitely an HO TB.

Yeah its a HO for sure

Looks like you have 96 dash and what not as well so things may be confused on the Ignition also to back harness which contains fuel pump power.

Yeah its a 95 or 96 dash or at least the column with the airbag in it.

It appears to be a 97+ or I'm learning to a 98+ swap as far as the engine goes. I recall my 97 XJ having a map sensor on the fire wall. Or maybe I'm confusing that with my old 95 XJ. Its a blur over the years with these XJs and MJs. I haven't done anything else with it the last few weeks. It does turn over so at least the engine isn't seized. Who ever did what they did didn't do a horrible job.

It's definitely the old 95 style that has the map sensor on the firewall. The 97 style had them next to the throttle body. My brother had a 98 cherokee. I used to have a 96. It all definitely starts to blur together after a while. Haha

There is no map sensor or plug for it on the firewall. Doesn't appear that the harness has been touched either. Maybe will dig into tomorrow a bit if I get some time

Zooming in kind of potatoed the photo but where I circled is where your map sensor is located. Indicating a 97+ harness/ throttle body and probably engine as well

I will have to check this out. Won't lie, I have yet to pop the hood again since I cleaned it and parked it. So this will be a very slow moving saga of getting this thing runny. Thanks for the reference

Spent a little bit of time today uncovering the rats nest of wiring behind the dash. This is going to be a chore to sort out in the coming weeks/months. Does anyone have a good source for wiring diagrams? This is for sure a OBD2 engine and harness in the MJ, Just not sold on it being a 97+ yet.

Some reason it keeps flipping the picture every time I try and add it to the post. This is under the dash on the drivers side. The old body harness has been spliced into. It has the fuse block on the drivers side vs the passenger side. So maybe the harness is from a 96? I know my old 97 XJ fuses were all on the passenger side of the vehicle. Will continue to dig into this as time goes.

Passenger side, Thankfully they swapped in the auto trans harnesses when they converted it from a manual.

That's a 96 ECM. So you're right, it might not be a 97+ harness etc

From what I have been reading a 97+ won't work with this interior and so forth. So this is good news. Just have to find out where the last person left off and continue on. Should be "easier" to track down 96 wiring diagrams. I hated owning a 97 XJ, was such a horrid year for everything.
