thorton
i just bought an 88 mj a couple weeks ago. the body is in good shape with no rust. i have a few mechanical problems that i need to address. it is the straight six w/ auto tranny and i believe it has O.D. and 3.55 gears with 31" tires. first of all it has a skip when it is idling--i changed the plugs wires, cap and button. it didn't change anything. i have looked for a vaccum hose being off, but haven't found one.---doesn't mean i haven't overlooked one either.---- what else should i be checking for? another thing is when riding down the road you don't seem to notice the skip and it actually gets better gas milage than my yj. another problem i have is a whining rear end with a vibration at the 45-50 mph when it is in O.D. but if you get on the gas and it shifts back you don't feel the vibration when you get to that speed. i don't have a lot of free time to back read all the posts that are put on the forums, so that is why i'm asking straight out. it is good to have found this club with so many people that seem interested in the little truck. thanks for any help that i can get. Cabz
If you tuned up the MJ and still have a skip , it may be dirty injectors. Find a "chevron " gas staition or an auto parts store that sells " TECRON" Buy two bottles put in in with 10 gal of premium gas and run till damn near out and then do the same again. Tecron is one of the best injector cleaners out there. The whining in the rear is probably from age and mileage, just check the fluids and drive the piss out of it till you have time to do a swap or rebuild on it. Oh and by the way Welcome to the site :D You will Like it here :D
pingpong
The vibration could be many things. First I would eliminate the u-joints as the culprit, check for play, if it only does it when it is shifting into OD, there is a chance a bad TPS could be causing it. Now for the miss at idle... HMM does the rpm change when it skips?
thorton
for now i have added the tecron to the fuel. hopefully if the weather and time allows this weekend, i will change the fluids in the diffs and change out the u joints and have the tires balanced. as far as rpms, i don't have a tach for accuracy, but there isn't a noticable change in rpms while it is in park, but i have noticed it burp a time or two while it is in drive sitting at a stop light. thanx for the input
