Windshield washer problem

Recommended Posts

Pump tests good but won't run when connected in truck. I have a varying voltage at the pump plug 10.8-11.4 when the wipers cycle and the washer is activated on the stalk. Any ideas? Something sounds shorted.

Put a headlight or turn signal bulb in place of the pump and see if it lights bright. Always best to load check a circuit.

Good idea. Just because you can see voltage on a multimeter (that puts so little load on a circuit it might as well be zero) doesn't mean the circuit can carry current. And if the voltage at the plug is 10.8V with no load, I can imagine the current carrying ability of this circuit isn't very good to begin with.

10.8V at the washer plug is very low. Makes me think you've got one or many bad connections between the battery and the pump. What is the battery voltage with the ignition and wipers on? Was this reading with the engine on or off?

Doesn't sound like a short, sounds like high resistance, either through a bad connection somewhere or a bad ground. Can you jump a ground to it and see if it goes to working?

Power doesn't matter if there's not a good ground on the truck.

Check the resistance between the ground connection at the pump plug over to the negative battery post. Key OFF.

I get 0 ohms between the black wire and bat. neg. terminal.

I know you said the pump checks out good...did you ohm it out for that test?  Try using some jumpers and power the pump direct from the battery and see what happens.  It might suck, it might blow, or it might do nothing, lol.

12v jumpers direct to the pump it runs and pisses washer fluid down the leg of your pants when you test it out of the truck

There is not enough power to light a test light so I am assuming a short in the circuit. I tried bypassing delay box already with no change.

How did you hook up the Test Light? Between C169B(+) & C169A(-) or between C169B(+) & good ground.

Connect Test Light between C169_B and Battery Negative (-). Does Test Light glow?

Next step:

Connect clip side of Test Light to Battery Positive (B+). Probe C169_A. Does Test Light glow?

C169_B to battery negative. No light key on or off. Washer button activated or not.
C169_A to battery positive. Light constant anytime key is on

Disconnect C171. Connect Testlight to good ground. Probe C171_D. KEY ON. Does Testlight shine brightly? If yes, jumper C171_D to C171_B. KEY ON. Does Washer Pump run?

Test light shines bright. Jumping to C171_B causes the pump to run. Am I correct in assuming it is probably a bad switch at this point?

If Intermittent Wiper/Washer Module is bypassed. Yes, bad switch or wires to/from switch.
