Sloppy 2wd 4.0 transmission tailshaft

I found a small amount of play in the tail shaft area of transmission after changing the rubber isolators. Both u-joints I replaced and are good. The play is literally in front of yolk. I can feel a tiny amount of movement there while the transmission doesn't move a hair. I noticed a new leak from rear pinion as well. My intentions are to separate the tail of trans. It's my understanding there is a bushing in there that needs replaced possibly. I'm having a little trouble finding info and I'm also curious as to why a bushing and not a bearing? Any thoughts, advice, or input would be appreciated thanks. I should add its an auto trans.

Yes that bushing gets worn out over time or fast. Depending on how well the trans is taken care of. As for why it’s a bushing, who knows. A bearing would’ve been smart. But I’m sure the AX-15 bushing is more available than the AX-5 which I had a very hard time to find. Unless it’s an AW4 which I know nothing about. I’ll do a little more digging. 

 

Edit: Chrysler does not show this elusive bushing as a serviceable part but there is a bushing on transfer case extensions that I wonder if they are the same.

So I split my spare 2wd transmission in my mj in storage. It had 0 play in the tailshaft and I brought home. I slowly got around to pulling the bad 1. Bushing looks good lol. I can grab the main shaft now and feel wobble galore. Looking for opinions. I want this as a daily work truck for summer. I need it done asap. I can go back and pull the rest Saturday (2.5 hrs 1 way).  Probably drive back down to do the same thing again Sunday so I can slowly get it buttoned up the following week. The dilemma is I have found a nice ax15 in a yard I planned on pulling this weekend. Do I do that, pull it, and cross my fingers it's good to swap it in now? I'm swamped with work, I found a bunch of stuff last week scattered in about 6 new yards. I'm booked now for the next 6 weeks starting next week for work. It's going to be my only shot and I don't want to pay a shop to do it. Thoughts/opinions?

OMG! This is how the other half lives! I broke down and splurged with a 10% off coupon and sale. Out the door for a hair over $145 at Lowe's. I have more time reaching for sockets and messing with the super stiff detent on the impact than anything. This little impact is amazing. Junkyards watch out and projects too. If my allergies weren't kicking right now, this whole transmission would be loose in an hour or less. I had almost half done earlier today but this thing makes it fun like figuring out you like the opposite sex for the first time at 12 years old!  I am amazed how I have been living in the dark ages and much easier this is just because I've been too cheap to buy 1 this nice.

I had put up on another post a while back, maybe my build "yard art to urban art" that I thought something got wedged in here theory. Well I pulled another flexplate off a 91 in my garage to compare.

I'd say my theory was true.

Part numbers are the same. I'm going with it. Plan on starting some this afternoon after I figure out which trans to use either 88 or 91(this is a 92 2wd).

received_837169359973198.jpeg.96417a5b134aedddf009a8aa2228c373.jpegYou can also visually see dents all over the flywheel with the largest being probably 3/16" deal I'm guessing but mainly on the face of it. The teeth look good. I'm worried what ever was wedged caused main damage. I'm planning on bird eyeing that seal and checking my oil obsessively for a while daily when it's back on the road. If anyone has seen this before please chime in for any pointers on what to expect else might be damaged. The converter bolts I checked and verified were still tight to factory specs, they did not back out and cause the plate damage. The damage to the bellhousing cover is actually close. Judging by the flex plate I'm guessing a bolt or socket that was dropped in the bell housing caught and wedged between the converter bolt head and bellhousing plate. When this happened I was backing up at a gas pump with my foot on the brake giving it 0 gas.
