Cabz
I have been thinking of swapping the puke goat for an auto trans. Since it is major surgeury to get the AW4 in and wired right , A freind of mine said he has a turbo 400 with the tcase that came out of a project XJ with a 401 AMC. The question is how would that work with the 4.0? it does not have an overdrive like the AX4 , how would that work out on the Highway?
Eagle
It's a good strong tranny and the bell housing bolt pattern will bolt to the 4.0L block. The AW4 overdrive ratio is, IIRC, 0.75:1. That means on the highway your RPMs will be approximately 25% more than if you ran an AW4 auto or AX-15 manual tranny with overdrive. If that's a problem, you can run less gear in the axles, but that hurts your crawl ratio off-road.
Cabz
I will be running 3.55 gears and 31's ( maybe 33's :D ) .
Cooter
It also doesn't have as low of a first gear. (TH400-2.48 TF999-2.74 AW4-2.80) I would swap in a TF999, or the AW4, the wiring isn't that big of a deal, and you will still need a provision for the CPS with the TH400. Also, make sure the t-case has a driver's side drop, the TH400 only came with a Q-trac or a Spicer 20 in factory applications.
