Parking Brake Release Cable & Handle

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where to get a new parking brake release cable & handle.  After searching CC, I do not see that it has been dealt with recently and some of the links offered no longer are active.  It is a discontinued part for Mopar but the part number is 52000861.

I have the foot cable but I was able to find both online when I was searching for mine. I think it was A1 auto that I ended up ordering from.

Thanks to you both but that parking brake assemble is for a CJ and will not fit an MJ per the seller.  The part I am looking for retails new between $14 and $15 dollars.  I just need the release cable, not the entire mechanism

90% of MJ specific parts are no longer available some of the crossover parts to the XJ remain plentiful like brake parts Transmissions Etc

I've never seen a brake release handle available on eBay but occasionally NOS Parts pop up

I have two extras which will eventually wind up on eBay and I'll be asking $50 each

As I stated it's junkyard or part out or you can get creative with the one that you have and see if you can repair it

Oh gotcha. You may be able to use one off of an early Toyota truck. They seem to be very similar.

Is this what you’re looking for or do you need the entire handle as well?

Cable:

Might be able to make this handle work:

I would just bend the tabs up flat where it would screw in.

@Manche757 Did you end up finding the part? I am having the same issue. I found one used on EBay but also don’t want to replace a bad part with another and it’s definitely not cheap. I’d be curious to know if you made another brake release handle work or if you found an original.

Thanks!

Hi JHughes, I see this is your first post.  On behalf of all of us knuckleheads, welcome to the CC.   Someone will probably ask you to register your VIN number.

It took a while, but I did find someone selling the handle used.  I don't recall what I paid for it.  Later, I saw someone else had one listed for sale here in classifieds. He wanted more than I wanted to pay just to have a spare, so I told him when he might lower his price to $40 that I would buy it and I did.  I have an 89 and an 87, so one old part could go.  As you have figured out, those are unique to the MJ and are no longer easy to come by.

After looking at the part, it shouldn't be too hard to fix.  More likely than not, the cable wore through where the attachment is on the end of the cable opposite from the handle.  That attachment fits in a slot on the release mechanism.   Find a similar size piece of cable and a something to lock on the new piece of cable.   Cut the broken end of the old cable. Leave as much of the old cable as you can in case you have to do it again in several years.  Using something large enough but small enough, clamp the cables together and you should be in business.  That will likely last longer than one out of a junker that likely has a cable worn in the same spot.

Thank you both for your feedback. I’m working on an alternative repair of the cable to not have to replace the whole mechanism. There are a couple originals available on eBay but definitely more than I’d like to spend.

Wanted to add an update for future searchers here - I also did not want to spend $150 on a 30+ year old original release cable when mine snapped (I just imagine them snapping shortly thereafter).

I bought the Crown Automotive J5351421 - this is a part for the 73-75 CJ5. Length is perfect for the Comanche and it drops right into the slot immediately in front of the release bracket. It is fully functional using only that slot for retention, but I'm going to cut up a little piece of angle to hold the front using the factory torx screws. I'll try to post some pics when I get that done, but wanted to share this as it's a brand-new part for $22 bucks shipped (ordered from Quadratec) and requires very little modification to work.
