Sorry to post such a basic question...again!  Could someone please confirm my axle type?  I am about to order diff fluid (75w-140) and a lube locker gasket and want to make sure my eyes are not deceiving me.  I've been staring at charts too long.  I can take a better pic if necessary.  Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys!!  What a nice surprise.  I bought this truck essentially sight unseen...another wild CL story, lol.

So that would mean it has the metric ton package?  It certainly seemed to handle the firewood payload nicely!

No, not the MT package. It has the standard 3+1 springs.

Ahh, thanks Don.  Maybe something I'll consider in the future.

Is the fluid capacity 2.0 quarts?  I haven't found any info on this forum from searching but I keep coming across 4.0 pints (2.0 quarts) on other jeep forums.

Two quarts is correct. It looks like the cover has never been off, and the original tag is still there. Do you know the gear ratio? Be sure to verify it by counting the ring and pinion teeth when you pull the cover for future reference.  :beerchug:

Very nice!!

My friend went bought brake rebuild kits, gaskets, etc for a dana 35.  Had it partway apart before he realized... it was a 44.  I found it funny, since my D35-equipped truck was on the lift next to his.

I thought all the ones with the Dana 44 Rear had the MT package?

The towing package could also come with the D44 some years. Maybe there was a stand-alone HD axle package as well??

My 87 came with an "off road" package: D44, front skid plate, gas tank skid plate, heady duty alternator, HD cooling,  but non-metric springs

If you pull the cover before you start to count look for them number stamped into the edge of the gear (save some count'en)

I had pulled myself 6 mj rear 44's and not 1 had a metric ton pack. Every single 1 had a 3 and 1 pack. I have yet to see a factory metric ton leaf.

Hmm, interesting. Mine has all that, guess I have that package too! Had no idea. Thanks!

Back in those days, you weren't so limited by "packages".

You could mix and match a lot.

I ordered at least 10 Comanches myself to be my demos at the dealership.

Question? In noticed the D44 cover in the picture has 10 bolts holes. Isn’t that a D60 cover. My D44 only has 9 bolt holes. I researched how to tell
the difference and from what I found that was the only way to tell the difference at first glance. I have found two D60s in the yards. One under a Cherokee and one under a Comanche. Sense a few people on this forum apparently need proof of funds like that here are the picsf3dad58824f0989b53d3f07287394e38.jpg

That’s what I understood when I did the research on it. 49ad91ee4710a5f8a08c70262b333b34.png
I think it checks out correct.

Oh man I’m sorry but the differences noted are on the front D44 and D60. I don’t want to get any bad info out there. I’m still learning about stuff. And apparently my counting is off.

don't forget to check to see if it has a Trac Lok differential, as you will need to add friction modifier.

That axle may not be original to the vehicle.

*Sigh*

A front D60 and a rear D60 cover is the same.  There's a couple slightly different versions, but they're the same, they swap, whatever.  Same number of bolts, same shape, etc.

You posted pictures of two D44s.  A front D44 also takes the same cover as a rear D44...

Please learn to ID axles before you keep telling people you've seen something or other that would be a unicorn if it was true.  There was no D60s in the MJ/XJ from the factory.
