Tuzmaster
Guys So its gauge cluster swap time on the 87 Manche, and I got a Renix era cluster. While doing this, it seems like a good idea to change the light bulbs to some blue leds. My question is, do the LEDs for 91+ years that are very common on eBay and Amazon will work with a 90 and earlier Renix gauges? Thanks guys
mattbuch96
Mine is a 1990, I swapped out my original cluster for this one with more gauges and I added some LEDS off eBay, I think it turned out great! I hope this helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

SVPete
I put in some purple (figured, why not...my interior is totally blue) LED's from Amazon. Got 10 for 9 dollars. They can be dimmed slightly. Look a little, there are many colors. Read the reviews since some are really bright. If you drive a lot at night (I don't) a bright dash is not a good thing. Perhaps less "SMD's" (that's the amount of light chips) is better for regular night driving. Most of these type are polarity sensitive, so check for proper operation before putting everything back together. You may need to turn them 180 degrees (I put about 5 out of the 9 in the correct orientation the first time). jpdriver1
I've had leds in the cluster of both comances for yrs --- work fine with dimmer
aaronbtxnc
I put red LEDs in my 88 for night time non-blinding, if ALL dash lights (and the one on the 4wd selector and the two tiny ones in the HVAC controls) are replaced the dimmer will not work, but if you leave one incandescent in there somewhere the dimmer will work, at least that's what I found on mine. mattbuch96
This was a direct swap, just make sure you get the correct cluster. There are 2 wiring harnesses and a speedo cable on the back. It is all plug and play. If you have an original cluster like me you need to exchange the engine temperature and oil pressure senders to senders and then I just bought white LED lights off eBay and switched all the lights out on the back of the cluster. Feel free to ask for any more help! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Mine works with the dimmer, I just bought cheap ones off eBay, but I know there is a place that makes nicer quality ones but there are more expensive. I am cheap lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The difference between 84-86 and 87-90 is the speedometer cable connection. the 87-90 cable uses a plastic end with a clip. You just need to swap the senders to make the gauges work properly, the tach will work out of the box.
Tuzmaster
I do not know if this is right, but here is what I found. If its first half of 87, it matches to 84-86. If its second half of 87, then its 88-90 Also, I heard the tac is not adjustable. The cluster i pulled I believe was out of a 4 cylinder model (or v6, didnt really pay attention). Is that going to be an issue? http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Interior/Instrument_Cluster.htm

ParadiseMJ
All the LED's worked great in my cluster and gauges...except the "brights" indicator. It was too dam bright in my face on dark roads. I took it out and replaced it with a regular bulb.

gogmorgo
Heh. In my mind the refuse bulb in the bright indicator is too bright. Apparently the previous owner of my XJ though the same cause he covered it with a few layers of opaque scotch tape.
Tuzmaster
So I have swapped in the cluster and the tach works! So does the fuel gauge and the voltmeter (which is almost at the red line but still withing spec. probably newerish alternator producing 14 V which is okay). But there is some confusion. There are 2 temp sensors apparently. One on the intake and one on the head of the motor that is near firewall on the driver's side. Which is the one that needs replacing? According to NAPA (authorized mopar dealer) the only one that they have is the one on the intake, but some people say its the head one that needs to be replaced. Which is the right one??? Also, does anyone have the part number for the speedo cable that is WITHOUT the plastic clip? That's how the original one clipped and I didn't grab the right one when I was at the junkyard. Thanks guys!
HOrnbrod
The dash gauge temp sensor is on the left rear cylinder head. Also, do THIS when you get a chance.
Tuzmaster
Gotta return that one then. Part number for the right one? TU108 I believe. What about the speedo cable?
HOrnbrod
Si, TU108 will work with the temp gauge. Speedo cable? :dunno:
Tuzmaster
The one I searched on autozone claims to be TU154. Is there any difference between the 2?
