Papa ken
I purchased a '96 XJ to swap over the 4.0 HO to my MJ. I know the '96 is kind of a bastard year due to the start of OBDII, but I got it cheap and I knew the history on it. I am planning on swappping everything from the motor, tranny, tease, alll the wiring, and the dash because I want to upgrade to AC while I am at it. My question on the swap is fuel pump related. It looks like the pump on the '96 mounts the same way as the one in my '88, so can I just buy a replacement '96 and use that to get the gas gage to work? Or, will a HO pump/sending unit from a 91-92? When I first bought the MJ, I had to swap out the tank so I used a new tank without a slosh pan in it. Not sure if it is pertinent or not, but figured I would add it for a little back ground. I can't remember what fuel pump assembly I ended up using, other than I got it at O'Reilly's and they had it in stock. In short, I am just curious what fuel pump I need to make my gas gage work and more importantly the motor work. Thanks, Ken
Eagle
The problem isn't the fuel pump, it's the sender and the gauge. The polarity of the gauge is different on the newer vehicle. Are you swappiing in the '96 dashboard and gauge cluster?

My interior wiring was hacked by mice at some point and it has been cobbled together.
sinkrun
I think the 1996 sending unit has the fuel pressure regulator on the inside of the tank was used in 96 only and is very hard to find a replacement. Not sure how this will affect what you are doing.

Not sure how this will affect what you are doing. According to the factory parts manual, the 91-96 4.0 MJs/XJs all used the same FP regulator on the rail. P/n 53030001. Looks like the in-tank units started in 1997.
