Bleeding concentric slave bearing 87 MJ 2.5L

Recommended Posts

Had replaced the 2.5L in my 87 MJ. Went to change break in oil. Found a surprise. Bolt that holds hose horseshoe shaped metal tubing from clutch master cylinder was dangling. Bolt had worked loose. Rubber hose was severed as well. I drove it like this to parts store. Still had fluid in slave master cylinder. Shifted okay. Wondering how it worked like that.

Replaced hose from slave cylinder to the horseshoe shaped metal tube tube which goes over transmission to concentric bearing. Reinstalled bolt to housing that held the horshoe shaped junction metal tube. Been bleeding and bleeding. Still won't shift. Know from past experiance this is a pain and you got to find that sweet spot that works.

Open bleed nipple with tubing in coke bottle of brake fluid.

Push clutch pedal to floor and hold to floor.

Tighten nipple.

Repeat process until all air bubbles gone and have good clutch pedal pressure and will shift.

Is all that correct?

Have had this MJ since new. Bleeding has never been much fun.

Thanks,

Railroad Sam

Hi Sam,

About 10 years ago, the clutch hydraulic hose on my 88 4.0 started leaking.

If I recall correctly, after changing the hose, I was actually able to gravity bleed it. I installed the new hose, opened the bleeder valve, wide open, fluid started flowing out, followed by  air bubbles, followed by more fluid.

I'm pretty sure that was sufficient for bleeding.

Good luck!

Gene
