88 Comanche Stalling Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have an 88 Comanche 6cyl 4.0 2wd renix. This was my main vehicle growing up and now is with my dad. He was washing the engine a few weeks back with some degreaser and since then it's not working right. The engine keeps stalling and when you try to accelerate it almost like skips a gear. He took it in to his local mechanic (doesn't specialize in jeeps) and they told him the transmission is bad. Everything was working perfect before he washed the engine so we have a hard time believing that the transmission is shot. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated. By the way we are in South Florida.

Thank You

Ron

Check for moisture in the distributor cap, that could cause it to run rough or stall out.. I washed my engine and had transmission shift problem. I disconnected and reconnected the transmission connectors on the passenger side of the engine bay and this fixed the issue, they were moist inside. Hope this helps.

There are a few sensors that do not like water at all.  Most importantly the TPS (throttle position sensor).  When they get wet the effects can be wonky shifting that SEEMS like slipping, it can be temporary or permanent...like require replacement.  If the TPS got soaked AND you suddenly need a new transmission, or you're having transmission issues out of the blue, it's likely that.  You can let it dry out...thoroughly...and then try it. If it tests badly...replace it.

You can test it with a regular voltmeter - http://comancheclub.com/topic/31486-renix-tps-testing-the-right-way/?hl=tps+testing

I'd get a second opinion...and not from any transmission company that starts with Aa...!!
