Spartan Locker won't unlock D30, can't steer

Recommended Posts

So... Ran into an issue today. The spartan locker that's up front in the D30 seems to have locked and won't unlock...

Not sure what the problem is or could be. Or how to get it to unlock.

If I take off the diff cover to investigate the issue, any parts I should have on hand to replace?

Not sure if it's a worn out spring or broken spring in the locker.. I'm just not sure and would appreciate some starting points!

Some more symptoms:

It is nearly impossible to turn left or right on the asphalt.

It hardly pops at all now, it did pop in turns under loads before. But now it's just locked and no popping.

This is how I had to drive home... Cuz of course I was 60 miles away when it happened... It was pulling hard right

I am going to throw something out there...possible broken axle shaft.  Might pull the shafts to check.

I've got about 140k on one with zero issues and pretty serious wheeling so I can't imagine one breaking but it's possible.

could have a brake sticking keeping it locked it. shouldn't pull much driving straight

I had the same thought -- not about a brake sticking (good thought, BTW!), but just that a locked locker shouldn't pull when going straight down a highway. A locked axle is only an issue going around corners, when the inside wheel doesn't travel as far as the outside wheel.

So... great suggestions fellas! I really appreciate it, I hoped that then brake was the problem... but nope.

Turned out some of the pins are sheared inside the locker assembly...

Looks like I'm gonna have to just replace the pins and springs and hope it stays together.. don't have the money to replace it with an eaton locker right now..

What could be the cause of this? In the time I have owned this jeep, I have not done anything very aggressive or had a wheel up in the air spinning and suddenly catch or nuthin... but I have no idea what kind of wheeling it went through before I bought it.
