Water pump - Mopar part # and interchangeability?

Recommended Posts

Got an 89 MJ 4.0L Renix.

I'm getting mixed information regarding the Mopar part #s. I keep seeing "V9900083" but some sources say this is for 97+ 4.0s, others say it will work on 2.5L MJs.

I looked up #83503407 (old?) replaced by #4626215?

Is there any interchange regarding 87-90, 91-96, 97-01?

Thanks.

Dunno. THe first one in my list is also a Jeep remanufactured unit. Until I looked them up, I wasn't aware that there's a different part number for the Renix water pump than for the '91 and newer.

The one in your link says it fits both the 2.5L and the 4.0L. I have always been of the understanding that the two engines use the same water pump, but there are different part numbers in the parts manuals. There are also different numbers for export, and for some years the ZJ 4.0L gets a different water pump than the XJ.

Who knew?

I apologize -- I suspect this isn't exactly helpful.

Whoa, I stumped the master!

I thought it was weird when I was trying to find OEM part #s and combing ebay and Mopar parts sites and getting all different types of interchange years and compatibility.

Off topic Eagle but I remember you from early NAXJA and even XJ Forum prior to that. I was a 16 year old kid with a 92 XJ and big dreams. Was pleasantly surprised to see your profile active here.

I think 87-01 MJ and XJ the water pumps will fit on the blocks. What you have to watch out for, is that the height on the water pumps can be different. I think there are two heights, possibly for each design era (RENIX, HO, and Late HO). On the latter blocks WJ and '01 TJ and up, the bolt pattern is different.

ditto! 20 years ago I bought my first jeep, first vehicle I bought on my own (first car was a old VW my parents gave me) and hit the internet to learn whatever I could about the XJ, Eagle was a big part of that education even if we've never spoken.
