Low as possible soa

Recommended Posts

So I am scoring a 8.8 with 4.10s and disc brakes already soa ready for a Comanche with u bolt eliminators for very cheap. With that being said I figure this Will put me at 6 inches of lift unfortunately. I am trying to keep this rig at 4 to 4.5 inches if at all possible. I did some searching but figured I would get some first hand experience from anyone who has tried to stay as low as possible soa. Thanks!

Worst case scenario i change it to spring under but it seemed handy it was already setup.

Not possible unless you can find an axle with 2" dia. or less tubes and use something like fiberglass mono leaf rear springs.    A SOA lift using a real axle and leaf springs will net at least 5.5-6.5 inches over your current height.

Going SOA does lift it roughly 6", but you can add or subtract from that with the leafpack.  As long as you keep your main leaf you can throw in all sort of flatter leafs.  I've always wondered what the lift would be if you cut the eyes off an XJ pack and install them under an MJ main.   :hmm:

just checking, but did it come out of an MJ?

The 8.8 did yes. That's why I didn't want to hack it up for spring under. I

The u bolt eliminators also provide lift so i think I'm gonna be hard pressed to keep this under 5 even using the xj leaves in place of.

I believe 831xj over at naxja did a custom "lower" lift UBE with an 8.8. Any kits are going to get you above that, but with welding ability and such one could do it.

basically you just need enough "height" to clear leaf spring center pin apparatus.

Track down some 70s 2wd Chevy springs and try them SOA.  They're within 1" in total length, and the center pin hole was only 1" out, IIRC, so with an offset perch it would be the same.

No, I have no idea how well it will work.  My bagged out 2wd springs wound up being about the right height, so I never bothered to find such springs.

I don't think anyone makes a direct fit set mj specific.

Most buy kits like above.... Or fab their own

They are not new.....the idea has been around as long as leaf springs.....its retro - tech

To each his own....

I like mine...they allow the spring to work smoother and tighter ...in a pure liner motion like they should...not choppy because of the arch of the shackle and with modern polymers they last forever...

Do you have sliders on your MJ? Would love to see some pics.

I have done several, on my yj and mjs, even put one in my zj.   The MJ I cut and ground down aftermarket mounts so they sit on top of the 8.8 axle.  As low as you can go. I even yanked out the factory bottom leaf.  Even with the stock original springs my front axle has 5.5 springs and 1 3/4 spacers to put it slightly nose down.  Looked dorky with 33s so I put on 35s.

Another MJ I have I did spring under, and had to use a add a leaf and shackles to just get it high enough to match the front with 1 3/4 inch spacers.

XJ shackles and 2wd leaf spring packs will bring you down. I've heard XJ shackles have some binding issues though but no experience with them.

Not trying to hijack but I'm in a similar situation and was thinking of trying XJ shackles to minimize the SOA lift. Has anyone tried these who can provide feedback on their effectiveness and fitment afterwards? TIA

minimal gain while having the threat of an inverted shackle binding up after full droop.  you need flatter leafs to get less lift.

So.... I'm not planning to wheel my MJ post lift, I've had my fill of 4wheeling in my XJ and the MJ is more of a project / road vehicle so if I never fully droop would I still run the risk of a bind? Just thinking out loud...
