JH4020
I started having a knocking sound after changing the oil in my 91 Comanche. I opened up the oil fill cap and all is good, then I un-hooked the intake vacuum from the valve cover to look in there and it is filled with a yellowish goop. Any ideas as to what would cause this problem?

75sv1
Its probably water and oil mixture. Could be some coolant leaking into the oil.
Gene
Agree with the concern about coolant in the oil. However, repeated short trip cold-weather operation can do this as well.An oil analysis would be able to tell whether there is just water, or antifreeze as well, in the oil.I have used Blackstone Labs www.blackstone-labs.com in the past.Gene
SVPete
I'm not so sure about the coolant theories. I had yellow-ish brown snot looking stuff in the recesses of top of my air filter housing.Really located where the forward CCV hose connects to the air filter canister lid. Cleaned all that out when I was following Cruisers tip for eliminating/reducing oil blow-by on the air filter. I hadn't been losing coolant (nor have I ever other than an obvious leak from a hose or the radiator.......knock on wood), so that's my reason for not being sold on the coolant theory (unless your coolant IS going "somewhere"). I don't have an alternative theory other than "old age"? Accumulation of "stuff"? Is the hose the original?
JH4020
Checked the oil and no water in it. None in the air filter CCV. Inside the oil fill cap no goop. What about the knocking sound?
Gene
Checked the oil and no water in it. How did you check it? Gene

JH4020
Got the valve cover off and started it. Everything working as should, then I noticed little bubbles popping up all around. Nothing big but still they are there. Any thoughts?
