Rear Parking Brake Cables

Recommended Posts

I am swapping a C8.25 into my MJ and will have a 4.5" lift.  From what I can find, the MJ has ~50" rear cables stock.  From this I conclude I should get cables that are between 55 to 60 inches.  Does anyone know of a vehicle with cables this length?  I've checked into some trucks but not finding anything that will work.  What cables have you guys used with the axle swaps and lifts?

I swapped a C8.25 with a SOA into my Commanche, I still had the park brake cables on the axle. I ended up hooking up one wheel to the original park brake cable bracket, the other one was too short. So I have park brake on only the one wheel right now, which works great, and when I get time I will sort out the other one.

Which side was too short?  Could you measure yours from the bracket to the drum so I can get an idea of what I'll need?  I'm looking at Rockauto and they have a 48.5" and a 49 3/4"  both having 8" of line being inside the drum.   No other retailer that I can find says the lengths of the cables.

You can always use Long box MJ cables if your still drums but they might be too long..

From what I have found in my research, the LWB and SWB rear cables ('splitter' bracket to the drums) are the same length.  The bracket is mounted further back on the LWB allowing for the same length in the rear section on both.  The front sections (from the cab to the 'splitter' bracket) are what are different between them.

No I will be using Hell Creeks lift with full springs.

In that case I would wait on the cables until you get your lift installed. A rear SOA lift is pretty easy to predict the lift results, but spring lift results can vary. I did a spring lift using MT springs and longer shackles, swapped the axle and installed disk brakes, and my stock cables were plenty long enough. You don't want to buy longer cables until you are sure you need them.

Those would be XJ cables if they were still on the axle, they're not the same as MJ ones.  Or at least they aren't if it's a newer XJ, older ones are very similar to the MJ cables (about 54" long), the newer ones use one long cable and one short cable (I believe about 70" and 30" respectively).  Kinda irrelevant for the OP, unless he wants to buy two of the newer style XJ long cables.

I stand by my statement that they should be long enough.  Mine worked, I'm SOA.  I bought brand new MJ cables when I put the axle in.  Of course I happen to have Isuzu brake calipers, so it's not a direct comparison, but still, there was a lot of slack left.  If you're worried about it I guess you could get the newer XJ cables or just an older XJ cable, I'd assume either will hook up fine.

Well normally I would wait but I don't have cables at all. Both axles had them cut so I need new ones. I may just wait on them until I have the axle reinstalled. I just would like to have as many parts I know I need as possible so I can get it put together. X

I hooked up the drivers side cable, the passenger side cable was too short. I can't get you measurements right now, my truck is about an hour away. I have to say it works just fine on the one wheel for now. I think to fix it, I will just extend the short cable instead of replace it.

I know the brackets are mounted further but the box is not extended by adding some at the end so I figure it should still be 5-6" longer then a short bed...

late model XJ PS cables should work too since they use one long and one short...

I am pretty sure I used XJ cables when I did my first 4.5" lift but that was nearly a decade ago and no longer have paperwork...

The early liberty's had drum brakes and you can always check those cable lengths as well...

OH and

has lengths
