Boostwerks Transfer Case Linkage Problems

Recommended Posts

Mine was a real b*@$£ to install. Took hours to finally install and adjust. I learned and made new swear words.

At one point, I was going to just put back on the factory one.

I was finally able to install and get it to work. Works fine.Don't recall what adjustments I had to do. But, If it gives me even so much as a @$#%;s hair worth of trouble, I'll pull its card.

What is funny, go post on the other forum, about how difficult the install was, and they will assume you are a complete idiot.

Did you add the extension? If not the angle will be steep. You have to place the trans case in 4lo, handle to 4lo, install and set length, and then it'll still be a rough grab into 4lo.

Did it on my buddies 94 5spd 4.0L ... That was without the extension before they had the manual kit. It was steep on angle so getting into 4lo was a grab and yank affair.

The auto has more distance so the angles are just right on the link.

Looks like the newer 5spd kit is just the 242 kit which includes a shift lever extension to reduce the steep angle.

Yea this is so true.  Tried several combinations and still nothing.  Might have to go with the Novak system but it is so expensive.

This is interesting because I was planning to get one when I did my 4wd conversion.  Now I am thinking no.

My XJ used to pop out of low range, and I had to take the whole shifter out because it was rusted together and I couldn't adjust it.  Once I freed it up and adjusted it, it works perfectly.

Should I stick with stock or is there a better aftermarket choice out there?

These ones work great.

they also have a eBay listing for $8 more.

I thought this design was roughly the same as boostwerks, which is based on another XJ/MJer who built the original design.

Mine isn't even as complicated as any of the ones that are commercially available.

I put the tcase back in, which meant I had to fix the shifter.  I went through my pile of tcases to see if I had a style of arm that bolts to the tcase that would work better, and I didn't really, so I decided to make one.

I put two holes in it for no reason.  If it didn't work on the top hole then it wasn't going to work.  The throw ratio is 1:1 using the stock gated shifter, which is what the upper hole is.

The rod ends are actually from some tailrotor pitch links, they aren't worn out so I'm guessing I got them from something that crashed.  The threaded rod is stainless, left over from one of the JB twinstick kits I bought.

You could buy any generic small rod end for very little money from a good hardware store (the ones I used retail for about $500/each, don't buy them).

So far I've had no issues with it, shifts nicely, hits all the gates how it should, hasn't disengaged on me (and I have a motor mount that needs to be changed).  If it wallows out the hole in the stock shifter handle I will pull it and put a doubler of some sort on it.

Finally, got everything working.  Thanks Rockfrog.

Let me explain the steps I took to get everything installed and aligned. I emailed Boostwerks and explained that I was having difficulty installing the linkage.  Boostwerks replied and requested that I email pictures explaining my concerns.  Came to find out that  the Shift Tab on the transfer case needs to pointing towards the rear and the Shift tab extension needs to be at its lowest to line up the angles and have a straight line with adjustable linkage.  Then I followed Rockfrog's advice about putting it in 4 lo and the shifter in 4 lo and everything is working perfect.  The instructions that Boostwerks sends you are for automatic not the manual transmission.  Thanks again....
