What year steering columns work in 86?

Recommended Posts

I have an 86 Comanche 2.5L standard on the floor, 2WD. Non tilt column, no cruise control or intermittent wipers.

My issue is the Steering Column Upper Lock Housing Cover without Tilt. The one I have is broken internally above the cam gears, a piece of plastic broke off. When you turn the key it is extremely hard to rotate to the start position. The garage here in Northern NY recommends replacing the entire column with a used one that's fine but, pricey. Parts wise I haven't been able to locate a manual upper lock housing cover only automatics. I have searched the site and found a thread stating 94 and below columns would work. Most talk about tilt columns. Looking for feedback. I don't have pics.

Standard shift column will need another standard. There is a lock out for the automatics that has to be worked around but you could use one of them.

Hollanders part interchange shows your exact column is to 90 I think the locks/ keys change 91 but otherwise is the same.

One with manual transmission, tilt and pulse wiper shows 85-90 interchange.

But the columns are so similar you could grab just about any until the later airbags and other design changes.

P.s you can do a used parts search in your are with car-part.com and www.hollanderparts.com.

Only issue may be not all junk yards are online and this old a jeep they may not bother inventorying it putting in a you pull instead.

I have a tilt column from an automatic '90 XJ in my '86 5-speed.  Any GM style/Saginaw column from an MJ, XJ, and various GM vehicles will work.  The wiring may or may not need modification, to that I can not speak towards as I did a complete wire harness and 4.0 swap on my '86.  I zip tied the lock cable the prevents the key from being removed if it's not in "park" on the automatic shift lever, as it's obviously not there lol.
