Hippie66
I've picked up some info on what parts I need, looking for input on what I might be missing. '89 2 wd, AX-15, 4.0, shortbed Donor is a complete and running '88, AW4, 4.0 I know I need the following: Axles Transmission Transfer case Radiator for trans cooler Front driveshaft Have rear driveshaft modified From what I have read, I may also need either a cable shifter or a linkage for the TC? Swap PCM due to the auto? What am I missing?
mjeff87
-pedal assembly (unless you keep existing and eliminate the clutch pedal) -floor shift assembly for the AW4 -TCU -engine side wiring harness from the '88, which includes the pigtail wiring for the TCU (and NSS) -TPS from the auto (or the whole TB), autos have a second wiring connection -kickdown cable and associated bracketry -speedometer cable, possibly (your existing may be too short) -trans crossmember, mounting plate and trans mount....take all of this with the trans -the entire TC shift assembly
desbennett004
You don't like the 5 speed? It would be an easier swap to put a 5 speed back in it I think. Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk
Hippie66
Thank you. Trying to have a good plan going into the swap.
SBpunk
Let us know how its going. Want to do the same thing in my 92 since its a pain to shift now after crushing my entire right upper body.

Blue88Comanche
I plan to do the same when i get some money to dump into the jeep, so be sure to take a bunch of pics for us! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Hippie66
Planning on it. I'm hoping the swap goes easy. My truck has little to no rust, not expecting any issues there. The donor is pretty clean as well.
Knucklehead97
I'm doing this eventually as well since AX-15's are rare in Bama and AW4's are a dime a dozen... plus I really like my MJ that has an auto in it.

Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk 5 speed is great for most things. I live 2 hours from some awesome rock crawling... auto is much better there. ParadiseMJ
Be sure to get the same era TCU. The connectors should match, color wise. If your donor has a green plug, you need the green connector, if it has a tan plug/tan connector. The TCU and TPS have to jive. Wiring inside the later (newer) TCU won't match up with the 88 harness

Hippie66
If I swap in an AX-15 from a 4x4, the only others parts I would need are axles, TC, linkage, and driveshafts? Will the TC from an '88 auto trans bolt up to an '87-'90 AX-15?

Will the TC from an '88 auto trans bolt up to an '87-'90 AX-15?. I don't think so, all ax-15s had 23 spline output shafts, the ba-10/5 and early aw-4s had 21 spline outputs. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk That matches what the guy told me. He said swapping the input on the transfer case is simple. It should be a lot quicker and easier than swapping in the automatic transmission.

What transfer case and transmission do you currently have? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hippie66
It should be AW4 and a 231. The '88 XJ donor is being dropped off tomorrow. I'll have to buy the correct input shaft.
