garyb
I have a 87 2wd sport truck 2.4 4cyl. I found a cherokee 4x4 same motor but with a 5 speed. My question do I need to change the rear end gears too match the front. Any info on this will help and how hard is this swap?
87MJTIM
If your MJ is auto, them most likely you will need to change or regear the rear axle to match the front. I don't know what the 4 cyl had for axle gears, but 4.0 autos were 3.55 while manuals were 3.07. If the two trucks have different trans, then it is probable that axles are different. That said, you are dealing with 30 +/- year old trucks. Who knows what previous owners changed on them.
yxmj
It is a a 2.5 not a 2.4 If factory yours will have 4.10(4.11) If the xj was factory and came with a 2.5 it will have 4.10(11) as well

yxmj
Then good chance it is I described above....look for the tag or if you want to be positive take off the diff cover.....it will be stamped on the gear. But the 4 banger xj is a good donor
Pete M
generally speaking: 2.5L + 4spd manual = 3.55 2.5L + 5spd manual = 4.
