I have 1986 comanche 2.5L. need new valve cover and I was told a valve cover off a Chevy S10 2.5l will work as Chevy was supposed to have made these engines. gogmorgo Posted January 7, 2017 Share Posted January 7, 2017 A lot of people think the MJ/XJ 2.5L is a GM engine, possibly because of the 2.8, possibly also because AMC did very briefly use Pontiac's Iron Duke 2.5L. But it's not the case. The Jeep 2.5L is an AMC engine. It was also used in later years with the Dakota I believe, along with the XJ. Later ones may have better valve covers and gaskets, but I can't speak to compatibility. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Rockfrog Posted January 14, 2017 Share Posted January 14, 2017 The 2.5L used in the MJ/XJ/YJ/TJ was an AMC design derived from the 4.2L in line six. Ironically the 2.5L was produced by more or less removing the 2 middle cylinders from the 4.2L. The later 4.0L was created by adding them back into the 2.5L.
