kook911
I am looking at a DYI winch bumper but I do not know how to weld. What I was wondering is how long whould it take a experience welder to weld up a pre fab bumper. Trying to see if the cost difference between the already welded one vs buying it and having a welder weld it.
desbennett004
Depends on the bumper and the prep involved. See if you can get someone to do it as a cash job, there are plenty of guys around that can weld who would take it on as a side project for a couple hundred bucks. Hippie66
Might find someone that will build a bumper from scratch and save some money. The one on my ZJ cost me less than a kit and has been put through some tough tests.

AMC86Kid
the cheapest way to do it is if you weld one yourself if you pay someone to do it vs buying a pre-made aftermarket one its going to cost almost the same unless you get lucky and you find a guy whos got something that will work lying around that he don't want no more
Hippie66
Not always. Mine was cheaper than a DIY kit. Forget about getting aftermarket for anywhere close to the same cost.

Hippie66
That includes a winch. Bargain if the winch is good.
Hippie66
http://www.ggcustommetalfab.com/jeep-bumpers-custom-bumpers $365 for a DIY bumper compareable to mine.
AMC86Kid
does he want just a bumper or a bumper with all the gear on it ? i feel like if you don't buy one with lights and a winch on it already then your getting ripped off
Blue88Comanche
My rear bumper, my brother bought a diy kit and had it welded for free by his high school welding instructor... it would have been less hassle to mount if the frame brackets where mounted when the bumper was welded. Dzimm
If you were to do the grinding and weld cleanup yourself it should take about a day to do just due to the cooling of the parts so they don't warp. If you have them do the grinding and cleanup I would say 1.5 days if they don't milk it to 2 days for extra $. If you can find someone who will do it cheap enough the Dirtbound offroad bumpers are cheap and with code "blackfriday20" I think it is you get 20% off. I just payed $185 shipped for a non-winch diy bumper with all the available add-ons for my truck. They have some winch ones for $250-300. Idk how much longer that code will work though so if youre looking for a cheap route that's what I would recommend.
johnj92131
If money is tight, here is what I would suggest: You live in a large metropolitan area, there are tons of adult education opportunities all around. Find a local welding class at one of them and make putting together the kit bumper of your choice your class project. Any welding class will have all the tools you will need to put the bumper together - so no need for you to buy expensive tools. You will also have a good teacher who can show you how to correct the mistakes you will make and let you know when you have done a proper job. In the end, you will learn a lot about how to weld and will earn the satisfaction of a job well done.
