mechanical fan

Recommended Posts

i`m seriously thinking about ditching that finger-chopper, is noisy, looks ugly and sucks power, gotta go... any options?

`my plan is to put a smaller, plastic one on the water pump, the original sitting off center annoy me somehow, with a couple of efans for extra cooling, any ideas about the mechanical one? a model i could fit on the water pump? perhaps one from a 2.5l? oh and i also plan to move the radiator forward to make more room...

It was offset from the factory for a reason comparative to every other 4.0 which is run off the water pump. There's not enough surface area centrally located to pull through the rather narrow radiator on these trucks. And not enough room to double up thicknesses on fans (mech over elec) thus the factory side by side mech-elec. You can try a double/triple elec fan set up. But plan on being in the multi hundreds for a decent set up.

really? i thought i was made like that because there wasn`t enough room and Jeep didn`t want to modify the engine bay one more time...

as a side question, does the pump from 2.5 fit the 4.0? i`m about to check the current pump and if must be replaced, i may take the chance and get a 2.5 water pump...

Absolutely nothing wrong with the OEM cooling system!  It does the job it was designed to do when the system is properly working.  The engineers at Jeep have a whole bunch more education, training, experience and real world testing than you or I.  Just get your cooling system working the way the factory built it and you should not have any problems.  I just went thru some cooling issues and guess what?  Once properly set up with the correct water pump and thermostat, my cooling system is just fine.

Yes it will fit....your only concern will be the rotation.... V-belt engines have water pumps that turn the other way....check this site for pics

i`ll keep that in mind, swaping impelers may do

except for the closed cooling system

swapping to an open system costs about 100$. 120$ if you buy a new radiator. You can buy a fitting that goes in the upper radiator hose and has a radiator cap. I ran this set up until I hit a deer and had to buy a new radiator (85$ shipped to my door) I still have the fitting with a brand new upper hose just in case I buy another closed system Jeep. Honestly it would be cheaper and easier to swap to an open system than to do all of this fan/water pump hassle

closed cooling system works great, that is why all new cars are switching to them. My 735i BMW made in the 1992 has the closed cooling system and has never had one single problem, as of my closed cooling system on my MJ jeeps. They work great, because they allow for better expansion then a open system. As of anything, they have to be maintained. Allows for temps to stay near operating temps longer with out cooling lower making the thermostat last twice as long.

2nd the jeep cooling system on the 4.0 can easily over cool the engine if it is allowed to do so. The jeep's 4.0 run a 205 to 210 and that the cooling system is well suited for that....

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the closed cooling system. A LOT of vehicles use it these days.

If it has a plastic non-pressurized expansion tank with a plastic cap that has min/max marks on it to check coolant level it's an open system. The pressure cap can be inline on the radiator hose or the radiator itself. My 15 JK has an open system. I haven't seen any newer vehicles with closed systems; all the ones I've looked at had open systems, but of course I haven't seen them all.

My wife's 2017 Chevy Traxs, wife's previous 2009 Chevy equinox, My sons 2008 Sierra 2500HD all have closed cooling system. My 2001 Dodge 3500, the 2017 corvette Z06, 2017 Nissian GTR, then there are all the BMW's and Mercedes. It is becoming more common now days. All the new systems have a better design because the plastics don't crack like the ones in the MJ's and the flat washer on cap don't go out as easy. That is why a good metal replacement is a good idea in my mind!
