Thanks for posting this.

When I purchased my '90 new, I received a VHS tape of this, unfortunately I recorded over it many years ago and have been trying to find a copy for a while. This is what it looks like.

The credits at the end give away the year...you just have to perform Roman math.

M = 1,000

+ CM = 1900

+ L = 1950

+ X = 1960

+ X = 1970

+ X = 1980

+ IX = 1989

For those who don't know.

Great nostalgic video. Reminds me of when I took delivery of my brand new '88 4X Long bed. It was neat to see the old cardboard and metal oil can...

MEDICAL XAVIER, a mnemonic to remember Roman numeral values. Do they still teach this in school?  :yes:

M = 1000
E = Not Used
D = 500
I = Not Used
C = 100
A = Not Used
L = 50

X = 10

A = Not Used

V = 5

I = 1

E = Not Used

R = Not Used

They never taught us any mnemonics or if they did I just forgot them. I'd be surprised if they teach it at all anymore in most places. I just have it memorized  :dunno:

Same for me. It's only seven things you have to remember, and the order isn't hugely important I don't think. I question the value of a mnemonic device where half the device doesn't mean anything, but I guess you did remember it.

My recollection of learning Roman numerals ~20 years ago is most students who struggled had more problems with the basic arithmetic involved than the interpretation of the numerals, and grasping that smaller numerals before larger ones reduced the size of the number instead of adding to it... but then they were six-year-olds.
