Front Skid Plate Mounting

Recommended Posts

I have a front skid plate off of a Cherokee that I want to put on my Comanche, but after looking at the holes, I noticed that the hole behind the sway bar on the drivers side isn't tapped for threads, and looks like a shallow hole because the steering box is above. How did you guys fix this? How could I fix this, I know I could drill and tap but something that shallow I'm skeptical. Please help!

I'd need to go out and look...but I do know there are only two bolts on one side and three on the other.  I think two on each side is sufficient.  The plate is not really going to protect you from a boulder and sticks aren't going to dislodge it anyway with only two.  I've swapped skids back and forth from XJ to MJ to XJ and back again...but I think I'd still need to go out and look

The hole you're talking about doesn't have a bolt. Skid wasn't really meant for rocks it was more for branches and to keep stuff out of the engine bay. I took mine off the first time I had to do any work under the vehicle. Hasn't gone back on since. Same with the gas tank skid.

I"m really putting it on because it was a cool factory option!  I also scored a transfer case skid too. There's a write up somewhere on here and I'll eventually get to it. I just want all these factory options that mine didn't come with. Can anyone relate?  :brows: I put in the factory clock recently lmao.

Absolutely! Get the headlight delay module. People have told me I've left my lights on and when I tell them they're on a delay they can't believe a vehicle that old had that option.

Gas tank skid is actually kinda useful.

I took mine off to get to steering gear bolts .mine had 3 bolts and nuts in front ,one short bolt on drivers side and 3 longer bolts on passenger side going through what i would call a torque mount shock.,that goes to the engine . L4 150c.i. They are a pita!!!!

This is true even if you don't off-road. I put on a tank skid on awhile back (Thanks Charlie). All the frame holes were there, just had to install the missing nutserts. The front skid mounts the same way. All the holes are there, the factory nutserts may be there and stripped, or may be missing. Easy fix either way, drill the old ones out if there, and get the correct size nutserts to match the existing frame holes, and a cheap manual install tool.

Ok, I'll definitely take it.  I'll PM you when I get a chance to get out that way. Thanks man!

  • 6 months later...

UPDATE: Installed a 3/8 -16 nutsert and the front skid plate would not bear the weight so I'm scrapping the project. Makes it a pain anyways to service anything under there and there's no rocks in Iowa. :waving:

Okay -- what weight? What project?
