odometer mileage question.

Recommended Posts

my truck was bought from NY where I guess they automatically mileage exempt all vehicles over 10 or 15 years old. so the title was mileage blank and my cluster was also swapped out at one point in time for reasons unknown.  so I don't know truly how many miles are on this pig. does anybody know a way to source or find out the milage on something?

Assuming you are asking about one of the several Renix-era trucks listed in your signature, it's not possible. The only odometer on those trucks is the one in the speedometer. If the cluster has been replaced, you have no way of knowing whether or not the odoemeter was set when the "new' cluster was installed to report the correct mileage.

what about the obd1?   hmm, guess i never thought about carfax either. how do they report mileage? ive never really messed with them before, but was always under the impression it was reported incident based, or do they also get inspection details?

carfax reports everytime a dealer service the vehicle, crashes, and if a state records mileage at inspection / smog testing. on some insurance company that require mileage it would report too. on the Renix nothing is recoreded at all in your system, you only have the mileage on the speedo cluster

And (ignoring the legal side of things) the odometers are ridiculously easy to change to any value in a Renix cluster. Could be the same for the HO, but I haven't dealt with them. So basically you can't trust a Renix odometer unless you are the original owner.

Too many people place so much trust in their speedometers that they overlook the actual mileage of a vehicle. A car with 50,000 thousand on it that's been horribley abused will be much worse off than a a vehicle with 150,000 miles that has been well taken care off.

agreed. But ive always have been curious on at least a ballpark of what the truck has on the body. Could be 100,000 rough miles or 400,000 babied miles. I know the engine only has roughly 100k. I swapped it in personally and was confirmed original components amd mileage.
