jM68
Yes I am new here. Partially, I own a 1986 2.5 Comanche custom 5 speed 4x4. All stock. What are my options best or worst to upgrade the 2.5 to a larger engine. Reason is I recycled wood shipping containers and make furniture. And I tow a trailer to craft sales. I'm assuming that a larger engine will make a little more fuel economy than the 4 cylinder. Thank you. Oh, my name jM68, is 86Mj reversed.
87Chief
You can either look into a 3.4L V6 swap. will have to find a 2.8 v6 from a comanche though. Those are more popular for the 86 comanche's. 4.0L can be done on 86's but it's really time consuming. I would sell the 86 and by a 4.0L comanche. 87MJTIM
Many 86 MJ owners swap Chevy 3.4. I've read it is larger version of the V6 than the 2.8 that came in the 86s. This way you can gain 2 cylinders. The issues with a 4.0 swap is the firewall on the 86 may need to be "modified" to fit the longer engine block. There are lots of write ups on the swap on Comancheclub. benjy_26
Realistically, how much more power do you need? I've pulled a 3500lb trailer with my SWB 87 equipped with 3.55's, an AX4, a 2.5, and 31's. Getting it going has not been an issue for my truck. I do plan on going to 4.56's and an AX5 in the future on mine. Perhaps you can get away with a gear swap too.
