4-cylinder clutches

Recommended Posts

What year did Jeep switch back to using an external slave on the 4-cylinder XJs? I have to replace the clutch on an '88 MJ 4-banger, and I think I might try to track down a newer bellhousing so I can convert to an external slave. Don't know what years to look for.

In addition to the bell housing, make sure you get the fork and bearing retainer.

My 86 2.5 sports a 96 XJ bell housing and fork along with an unknown year bearing retainer. Master, hose and slave are for a 95 XJ and the throwout bearing was a Mopar I had bought for an 03 TJ. This MJ has a much better clutch feel than my TJ which I have owned since 03.

The 86 and earliers had external slave as well for both the 2.8 and 2.5. But when I changed mine over I found both bellhousings the same (internal and external) but the internal one didnt have the ball stud or the slave studs and spacer, otherwise they were identical.

i have an 87 with a 4 speed and the bell housing had the holes and stuff set up for the slave outside and the internal bearing junk thing too. i swapped to an 86 5 speed transmission and the bell housing was the same.
