jennrnua
A little background on my 89 Comanche. Bought it from a guy who bought it new as his "fishing truck" he drove daily. He got a new truck years ago (4-5 years) and parked the Comanche. Needless to say the gas was like crisco. So here's what I've done, started with cleaning the tank and lines and put in an old fuel pump I had laying around that was working (just not well) just to try and get it running, that didn't work. Since I've replaced the fuel regulator, fuel filter, CPS, injectors and today I replaced the fuel pump. It wouldn't crank at all until today when I replaced the fuel pump. Now it will crank, stays running for 2-3 seconds and cuts off. If I so much as breathe on the gas pedal it cuts off. If I use starter fluid it will crank and run for just a little bit longer but eventually cuts off. Any ideas, is there something I am missing? Anyone ever had this same problem? gogmorgo
Just for clarification, a motor cranks when it's being turned over by the starter motor. It fires when it starts running under it's own power. Sounds like yours is cranking but not firing? Sounds like a low/no fuel pressure problem. Have you tested the fuel pressure? Could be caused by a weak pump... Such as one that was laying around cause it didn't work well... What did the rubber hose that goes onto the fuel pump in the tank look like? Also, have you checked the ballast resistor? Try just connecting the two wires together to bypass it.

gogmorgo
Fuel pump is still available. Same as an XJ pump. The sending unit assembly that the pump sits in however has been out of production for a long time. You might be able to find someone to rebuild it, and they do show up on eBay, Craigslist, etc. every so often.
cruiser54
Ballast resistor might be bad. Sure would be a good idea to TEST things first.

Megadan
I had this EXACT problem and I spent a long time trying to track down my culprit. What my problem ended up being was the rubber hose that connects the pump to the metal tube on the hanger inside of the tank. In my case the hose had slipped back and was letting most of the pressure bleed off as it spewed the fuel right back into the tank. I used my AN flare tool and put a small lip on the end of the hose and tightened the heck out of the clamp. This may not be your problem, but it's something to keep in mind. I spent ages testing, parts swapping, and bypassing all kinds of crap with no success. Turned out to be a 30 minute fix that cost me $
