Manual to Auto Swap?

Recommended Posts

Aloha All,

I've got a quick question. I'm doing a tranny swap in my 88 MJ. I'm going from the Peugeot to 96' AW4. I have all the hardware and manual shifter from BrettM.

I need to know if I need to change out the pilot bearing? If I do what do I ask for at the parts store? A bearing from a 96'?

This is the last stage in my 2wd to 4wd conversion. Everything else is bolted in and ready to go.

Any help would be appreciated!

BIG Mahalo's!

I believe so. Best bet would to be take a caliper and measure where the bearing needs to sit and measure the shaft size. I remember reading somewhere about using an older CJ bearing that had the proper sizes, but I don't have a link to that, and I don't have any sizes or more info.

I don't think you need a pilot bushing for an automatic. At least I don't remember seeing one last time I pulled one. :? You might have to change your flywheel to make it work. I think they are different parts... actually I am almost positive. I hope you got a TCM for the tranny as well, as a tps for an automatic.

Thanks for the help guys. I have the complete tranny/t-case along with all the computers, linkages, etc. The manual controller from Brett does away with the computer and electronic stuff, so no worries there.

Does anyone have a FSM where they can look to see if a pilot bearing is listed for the auto or is that strictly for the manual? I've only had manual XJ & MJ's. This is the first auto I'll have.

I remeber that link but I can't find it. I used these 2 as references, neither states using a pilot bearing with the auto, only removal of the bearing.

No Pilot bearings are used for an auto , the converter has a stub shaft that goes into the crank.

I'm doing the same swap on my '88 Comanche (from BA 10/5 to AW4) as soon as I can find someplace I can work on it! I REALLY miss my garage in the house I just sold! I just caught heck for checking the oil in my wife's car at the apartment we are in now!
