mjeff87
Quick, can anyone tell me how to determine a ratio on an 8.8, short of popping the cover? A 97 exploder just showed up in the 'yard, and I'm trying to find out what's in it. There's only 1 tag on a cover bolt with a whole gaggle of numbers, none of which I could translate into a ratio :( If it's 4.10, I'm gonna snag it for resale (if anyone wants it let me know) Thanks, Jeff
87manche
the old fashioned turn the wheels and count the pinion/DS rotations method. Mark both wheels, get someone to turn the opposite wheel at the same time. Count the revolutions of the wheels to get the pinion to do one full turn. 4 wheel turns=4:
mjeff87
Pete, we need a "slapping forehead" smiley...... I swear sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees  Anyways, it's a '97 (with discs). If it's still down there on Saturday I think I'm going to get it. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll only charge me for a "2WD" rear axle, $40 :D They gave me (as in didn't ring up) an almost brand new MJ cargo mat with full padding last weekend, but I bought a bunch of other stuff too. pingpong
If you pick that one up, I think I know someone who wil buy it from you. Check the ratio first though. I might sugest that you pull everything including the pinion flange, u-bolts and plates as well as the rubber brake line. All these will add a lil resale value. I'll have my 8.8 for sale probrably by the end of 06, but it is all ready built, so you don't want that. Patrick
mjeff87
I'll let you know Patrick. I've already got my '44 for my MJ, so I'm just interested in getting it for anyone else who might need it, only 'cause their prices are so good (I'll add a tiny markup for my effort, tho :-D ) The only thing they'll charge extra for would be the calipers and rotors (like $10 and $7 each, respectively), and maybe also the e-brake cables (IIRC $7-8 each). All the mounting crap and pinion flange is included in the axle price. I'm actually swapping my XJ '44 with a guy who has an MJ '44 but needs an XJ one....a match made in heaven. That way I can stay SUA and get it under the MJ easier (for now) Jeff
XJ Maki
sounds like you're all set but FTR here's the 8.8 axle tag ID:
DirtyComanche
Take everything with it that you can. I screwed up and didn't take the adapter for the flanged pinon to a Ujoint, and that cost me about $45 down the road. Also, brake rotors are bloody expesnive for these axles (at least, they are here). So, if they can be machined, take them!
mjeff87
sounds like you're all set but FTR here's the 8.8 axle tag ID: That would be the tag that's missing from the axle LOL..... there is another tag on it, but it's about a 1" square one with a bunch of #'s, like: 25 7845 65 3 5809 001 41 025 3 (not the exact #'s there, but you get the point:)) Thanks for that pic, tho. I'm gonna save a copy of it for future reference! Jeff
pingpong
I too didnt get everything with my axle. The pinion flange nunts were like 7 bucks, the u-bolts were 60 form the dealership, the spring plates were another 45 form the stealership. Be advised when rotated pinion angle set these things take 4 qts of fluid. alo they make mini spools for these as well. The down side is gearing stops at 4.56 or 4.88, and this is why I will be selling my axles. On a side note, for anuone consideriing running one of these, The ring gear sits real close to the diff cover, and thay are not very well made. They tend to leak once peeeled a lil, and the dent real easy. Blue torch fab makes a great cover, it is what i am running now. Patrcik
