Guest
I have a 1988 Mj Comanche with the carbureted 2,5 Lts. carburetor is Carter YFA "non feedback" for the non regulated market. Engine is Ok. I live in Argentina and use this truck for some "light" off road condition. I have the NP231 2,72:1 and D30 and 35 with the 4.1 :1. According to specs power is 105 @ 5000 and torque is 132 @ 2800. Now what can you tell me about this power plant? I personally feel it is not enough power........... Is the engine Ok for the off road condition ? I wonder why Jeep departured this power plant on this truks............... Thanks. Regards Fernando
mj_lover
i had a 88, tbi 4 popper, loved it, bullet proof. its good offroad, good low end torque for a 4 cyl, goes anywhere a 4.0L goes, only not as fast, but then again, its a jeep..no speed involved
whowey
Many people off-road with the 2.5l motor. Its simple, durable and cheap to maintain(at least here in the states it is). Other than maybe 1986 models, the US version of the 2.5l is Throttle Body injection rather than a carburetor. You should also have a manual transmission, probably a 5-spd. With 4.10 gearing, you should have enough available horsepower to off-road in a variety of conditions. Deep, thick mud may be a real concern for you. The 2.5l motor lasted in the Jeep lineup until the advent of 2.4l motor just the last few years in the Wranglers. The primary reason for putting a small motor like this into Comanches and Cherokees, was the fuel economy. There is a faction of US consumers that are throughly concerned with the fuel economy that a vehicle has. You probably haven't had to deal with that attitude much in Argentina. Your nation is the number 5 worldwide oil exporter, the US is the number 1 oil importer, and your nation's number 1 oil customer. In fact the Citgo Oil company maintains a tremendous US presence. Ha, ha. Just visited Argentina last week. Like when I visited Peru last year, I saw vehicles with diesels that were never intended to have diesels, and a LOT of newer cars and small pickups with diesels that have never been offered with diesel power in the U.S.

Eagle
Fernando, I spoke with a friend last night who has one of the genuine factory Stage 3 cam kits for the 2.5L engine. He bought it for an MJ but his plans have changed and he now does not plan to use it. He is willing to sell it. If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll get you his e-mail address. If you are interested, all negotiations will be between you and him. I don't want to be a "middle man."
