1986 Radio Wiring Adapter

Recommended Posts

Anyone know where you can get one at, if they make them? I have searched everywhere, including Amazon and Ebay, and can't find one. I also did a search on here and all it says is you have to splice into the factory wiring harness. I really don't want to cut up the wiring harness if I can avoid it. Any help is appreciated.

Metra suggests this one http://metraonline.com/part/71-1002

but I'm pretty sure that I remember someone saying that it is incorrect because the factory wiring has 2 connectors.

for me if the situation ever came up where I couldn't find a harness I wouldn't cut off the factory one. Instead I would cut into the wire jackets and attach the after market wiring behind the factory connector so it would stay intact in case I had to put the factory radio back.

That link is for the newer style, they changed the wiring harness when they redesigned the whole engine bay in '87.

I plan on keeping this Jeep till the Jeep or I am dead (hoping not for a LONG time) so if I do end up having to cut into the factory, I'm going to be soldering and heat shrinking everything to do it the correct way. My Jeep didn't come with the factory radio so that part doesn't concern me, I just don't like cutting the factory harness up if I can avoid it (not like there is much of one to start with in an '86).

The main issue comes down to which color wire goes where. :???:

Some connectors were changed for 87, some were not. In my 87, I plugged in a factory 1986 radio right to the original connector, but the connector was different for the clock from 86 to 87. Mine was also radio delete when new. I know this doesnt help you with your wiring, just thought it would be good info for someone. You might need to look into radio adapters for AMC cars of the same era. I looked into the adapter thing too a while back, but then found a working factory radio that plugged in, so I havent gone any further in my search. Sorry.

  • 6 years later...

I know this is six years old, but my factory radio finally gave up. I have bought a new Sony head unit but don't want to cut out the factory connector because I may have the original AMC unit rebuilt. Does anyone know a part number for the correct adapters from Scosch or Metra so I don't have to tear up my harness?
