Keeps stalling

I have a 4.0 that stalls. It turns over fine, although it does have problems starting right up sometimes. I turn on the ac and it idles down and stalls. It is a 5 speed and I put it in gear and try to go and it idles down and stalls. I try to leave it running in neutral and it stalls. I did replace the fuel injectors about 7 years ago and I will buy new ones if I need to. I replaced the fuel filter a year or two ago. I think it's getting fuel or it wouldn't start at all anyway, right? Thanks for your help, trying to keep from having to take it to the shop.

you an be getting fuel but not enough, too much , or not enough pressure all those would make your engine run wierd.

First question...........Is the Fuel Fresh???? You do drive this MJ?? It not just parked and sitting :dunno:

 

If you can, check the fuel pressure, you should be reading 31psi with the vacuum connected to the pressure regulator, and 39psi with the vacuum dis-connected.

 

Change the frame fuel filter. Pull the sending unit and check the sock filter, and the connection hose from the pump to the steel out-put line on the sender head, for cracks, missing worm clamps.

 

Also, a good cleaning of the IAC would be a good start too.

Thanks wildman, I do drive it although it had been sitting recently for about two weeks. The last time I drove it I thought I was going to have to tow it home. It stalled and I could not get to restart. It finally started and ran fine all the way home. The frame fuel filter is what I replaced within the last 2 years but I will replace again because it is easy and cheap. I took the air filter cover off to change it and it looked good. I replaced the cover and checked all connections I could find and still the same problem. I do not have a pressure gauge but will pick one up when I buy the fuel filter. Thanks!

Gas becomes "stale" after a couple weeks, and if you buy from a low volume station, you don't know now "stale" the gas is when you get it pumped :dunno:

 

 

Yes, 2 years of a frame filter is pushing it, that's like a once a year if not more replacement item.

 

Don't forget to de-pressurize the fuel line before you try to dis-connect the old filter :eek:

 

Start with the simple things, and go from there :yes:

Changed the fuel filter and BAM! stays running. It stalled a few times while driving it around but started back up and stayed running. I decided that since I don't drive it as often as the other cars(04 Escape, 04 Mini Cooper, my wife's)I will not fill up the tank. I did just put 5 gallons of gas in it and it was at 1/8 of tank so I'm hoping it was a combination of stale gas and old fuel filter. Thanks again, Wildman, much appreciated.

Old topic but seems appropriate to my issue.

I've been baby sitting my son's '92 while he is out of state.  4wd standard, 4.0L. I run it every 3-4 weeks for 10-15 minutes, driving on some trails in the back woods, due to it not being street legal and missing the driver's door (hinges rusted and door fell off).

Anyway, 2 months ago it wouldn't start, but cranked strongly. I added 2.5 gallons and it started and ran ok. 1 month ago I ran it for a few miles.

Yesterday it started but stalled after a few minutes and then would not start.  Only 6 miles on the 2.5 gallons I added 2 months ago. The other gas in the tank is probably from last summer.  Fuel gauge doesn't work so not sure how much exists.

Tank was emptied and fuel pump and filter replaced in 2015.

 

So how should I handle the fuel in this situation?  Running it briefly every month.   Use a fuel stabilizer?  Fill the tank?  Only add fuel when running it?

Hi Brian,

 

I am a HUGE believer in Stabil. I have some small engines that are run less than yearly, they start easily even with year old fuel.

 

BUT you should drain the tank of the poor quality fuel that is in there, and start over again.

 

There are threads on draining the tank by pulling the fuel pump relay and jumpering at this location to run the fuel pump. Then remove the fuel filter,  or tap into the fuel rail under the hood, slip a hose over one of the fittings, and you can pump the gas tank dry.  Then add 5 gallons fresh fuel with 2 ounces (I think follow their directions) of Stabil.

I was able to drain the tank and then added 2 gallons fresh gas with Stabil; it started and ran ok.   Thanks.

Its also a good idea to buy premium gas, it has less ethanol and should keep longer especially with the stabil added.
