'86 mj manual trans

Recommended Posts

Ok, here I am again with another transimission question. I have this mj that i saved from the crusher that had a blown headgasket. I have acquired a 3.4 camaro motor to put in, but found out after I had engine and trans. out that the 904 is shot. As I am having trouble finding a good 904 cheap to replace it with I am now rethinking my options. It is a 2wd mj but I am thinking that since I may decide to go 4wd someday, now would be the time to at least put in the transfer case. So here is the latest option, I found an 86 yesterday that has a manual trans in it, along with the transfer case and evearything else I will need to change over to 4wd manual. I did not think to check at the time what manual trans is in it, what are the possibilities, ax4 or ax5. Also I would like to know how good these trans are, I had a 87xj years ago with a puegot 5sp and I knowa that was junk. Sorry for the long post, but any advice will be appreciated. One reason I like to go with a diff trans than the 904 is to gain some cruising speed with the 5sp.

The AX-4 and AX-5 are virtually identical, except the AX-4 does not have the 5th gear. The only way to tell the difference is to grab the shifter and see if it goes into 5th.

They're good transmissions. I don't see why they wouldn't hold up to your 3.4

Manual > Automatic anyway.

And yes, the pukey BA 10/5 is essentially crap... behind a 4.0. It might work a bit better behind a 2.5. (Can't go behind it anyway)

But it might not.
