I was sitting in my 88 american idling and she stalled on me. Now, sitting in best buy parking lot broke down...getting fuel. Spark is good. Flooded? Let it sit for like five, now it started. Seems to b ok....wtf?????

It started, ran all day so far but happens alot often. At least 4-5 x a week.

M/T or Auto? So far I've had a bad CPS, TPS, and IAC. Any (or all) could cause your problem.

It what the coil sits on, and plugs into.

 

Most odd electrical problems, stalls, no starts can lead to a bad ground, bad ground cable.

 

As you described, you were sitting and idling..........and stalling out. Take the obvious out, like the CPS, and with the engine bay getting hot, and just stalling, could be the ignition module getting heat soaked, and shutting down. Was a big problem with Ford vans in the 80's, the coil was mounted on top of the intake manifold, and with the dog house on, the engine would shut down *been there, had that :roll: * the solution was to move the coil off the manifold, and mount it on the "fire wall" to solve the problem of the coil getting too hot.

 

It has been a problem with the older Renix systems too, plus think about it, it's 22+ years old too :roll: Too much heat, and the module/coil shut down, you sit, let it cool, and it re-starts. That gave it time to get to a temperature that it would operate at, and got you going again.

When mine had the no start issue I replaced the coil/module with a jy one ($30 vs $150). It didn't make a difference but I was only out $30. If you look for a module find one with the P/N ending in C. It was the last rev.

Boxy, square, 'dated' styling, even when brand new,

holdover from an earlier time,

economy oriented (for a Jeep anyway)

4 & 6 cylinder, 2 & 4 door body styles,

 

 

the XJ was more like the Rambler American than just about anything else with an AMC badge on it.

thanks for the info. i don't understand it...if i leave it outside overnight, and it even mists out, problem starting

Yup, that could be your problem.

 

Moister in the air + cracked case on the module = bad ignition problems :eek:

 

Also.......what condition are the plug wire in, like good quality newer wires???? something not out of the bargain bin at the parts store.

 

Next time you in your JY, grab one, make sure it's for the Renix system, and swap it in, could solve a few other problems that you been posting about.........well, except for the Dakota lights :roll:
