87 MJ problems

Recommended Posts

I just got my Manche and there are a couple of problems with it.

The dashboard does not light up at all. When I turn on the headlights the only light that is on is the right turn signal is green constant. Does it sound like the bulbs are out in the dash or a fuse is blown, or both?

Only the driver door lock works, but you have to jiggle it. Would a locksmith be good for this?

The passenger window does not roll down, it appears it literally starts to scratch the window, before I take the door panel off to look is there something specifically I should be looking for?

The windshield wiper switch is totally loose, the wipers work but I almost expect the switch to fall apart any minute, how would I fix this?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm sure you guys know how it is when you get these things.

So far I've repaired a leaky rear diff, fuel tank, and tranny; Replaced the rear brake drums, replaced air filter, and oil chg. She drives great.

patience grasshoppa. :D it may seem like it, but we're not actually all here 24/7. :typing:

Check your front turn signal bulb sockets. they are known to cause issues when they corrode internally.

the pass window has me scratching my head. never heard of that one. might be that your crank mechanism is toast. be careful pulling the door panel, as the little plastic christmas trees like to rip out of the panel before they pull out of the door. :(

And please review rule number 2

When the power window regulator died on my wife's 2000 XJ, I replaced the part myself (at over $100 for the part, I couldn't afford to pay shop rates to install it). First try, I somehow got the glass outside the channels and it was scraping when I tried to close the window. I had to take it all apart and do it over to get the window running smoothly. I'd suggest taking a close look at how the glass sits relative to the channels, and then compare to the other door, which (I assume and hope) operates correctly.

The fact that the passenger door lock also doesn't work is a strong clue that someone has been inside that door ... someone who did not know what they were doing.

wow.the dash light thing sounds like mine. The green turn light comes on when I turn on my lights. I've been under there but what a mess I found with wiring. I actually had tot have an auto electrician rewire much of my rig because pretty much all of my elecs were goofy when I bought my rig.

The good news is..you sure got a clean straight body!

Thanks for the posts guys, I forgot to mention that the door locks and windows are manual, not power. I do have a feeling the wiring is all messed up, I guess I'll just have to dig thru it and hopefully figure it out.

for your dash lights, have you turned the headlight knob counter clockwise enough? I know when I bought my MJ I thought I had dash light problems, but really I just didn't know how to operate the switch. Crazy I know, but it wasn't intuitive to me, so it might be worth the reminder. Although if you still have wierdness I would second that bad ground in the turn signal sockets, I had that problem as well.
