Dana 30 vacuum disconnect mod

Recommended Posts

I recall seeing a write up on swaping out the vacuum disconnect out of the Dana 30. If memory serves there was no axle shaft changes but rather some sort of washers were inserted. I did a search on the site but I am apparently too dumb or too tired to enter the correct terms to get what I am after. Can someone point me to the right place with the instructions?

Thanks

Thanks. Also been thinking of putting in a lunchbox type locker in the front and have read that I still need to have a disconnect capability. Not sure why this would be as there would be no torque to engage the locker without power to the wheels. That is ifbi install a locker and remove the vacuum disconnect, nothing will happen until I engage the transfer case. Do I have this right or am I missing something?

If it's a good locker that unlocks itself when it's not needed, then no, you won't need the CAD. It's generally only done when the front end is welded, and a manual lock kit is installed for the CAD. Even then, when in 4wd, it would power the left wheel with the CAD disconnected.

The problem with locking the front by welding it is that the wheels have to turn at the same speed, regardless of 2wd or 4wd, and that eats tires. If it's a good locker, and unlocks itself when turning, leaving the CAD locked will be fine.

If you're willing to drop the cash on a locker, I would also suggest getting yourself a non-CAD shaft. Even with the CAD locked, it can still fail if the fork or collar breaks.

plus your current u-joints are the smaller 260 variety. upgrading to late model axle shafts will get rid of the CAD as well as get you a strength upgrade to 297/760 joints.
