specialkeay
My 4.0 has an oil leak I can't seem to see. I think its in the back of the engine were i can't see, I'm hoping its not a rear main seal, Is that commun to go on these motors?
Pete M
sorta common. but I'd look into the valve cover first. leaks at the back can dribble just as much oil as a RMS and are infinitely easier to cure. Try wiping a paper towel back there to see is the oily residue is fresh or old.
-600JeepMJ
:agree: valve cover leak put a very oil big stain on my drive way
comanche09
Could also be the oil filter adapter leaking down the block.
Geonovast
This is unlikely, but possible and doesn't hurt to check. My 88 XJ had what appeared to be a VC or RMS leak. It wasn't either. Turns out the passenger side coil spring had broken, resulting in the passenger UCA to smack the pan. At first it wasn't bad, the oil trailed along the oil pan lip and dripped off the back. But it got much, much worse.
specialkeay
It was the valve cover gasket. Thanks
