COMANCHE45
I have an 88 with 4.0 and a 5 speed and have found a doner vehicle, same year with 4.0/Automatic that I want to swap in. How difficult is this going to be? :dunno:
87Warrior
Are you just wanting to swap the auto over, or the whole drivetrain? If you are swapping the whole drivetrain, everything should be unbolt from the donor and bolt into the MJ. If you just want the auto, you will have to install the flexplate from the donor and remove the pilot bushing from the end of the MJ's crank. maddzz1
I think you also need the TCU from the donor. Are they both 2wd or 4wd? or one of each?
Geonovast
You'll want to swap axles if yours are factory. The auto is going to DOG in those 3.07s. Why do you want the auto?
knever3
It will take some work, going from a 5 speed to an auto. You will need the trans, trans computer and wiring in the passenger footwell. Throttle body for the kick down cable mounts. Linkage from the auto Jeep to trans The axles as said, 3.55 on the auto, 3.07's on the 5 speed. Is it a column shift? 4wd or 2wd? And of course, if 4wd what are you doing with the 5 speed tranny?
COMANCHE45
I would like to swap motor and auto tranny in together as both have lower miles than mine. Also, they are both 4WD's. Sounds like a lot of work though.
Pete M
should be a thread in the DIY that goes into more detail about the auto swap.
