HORRID fuel mileage

i've got the 23 gallon tank with 4.0,aw4 and 4wd and i only get 330-350 out of a tank.mine is a 10mile commute to work doing 55-60 mph and then a little city driving.some people get better mileage or think they do going by inaccurate speedometers or relying on the gauge itself.this truck has been in the family since it was less than a year old and only had 8k miles on it and it didn't get much better mileage then.my gf's 95 grand cherokee with a 4.0 gets about 5 more miles a gallon than my truck,go figure.

Did you actually PUT 23 gallons in it and run it until empty? Or are you just dividing 300 by 23? Even at that it comes to 13 mpg, not unheard of. Bad, but not crazy bad.

 

Miles driven divided by fuel used instead of the size of the tank...that, and what size tires you're running vs. what was stock (speedo/odo calibration).

 

If it still turns out that you're getting 13 mpg. I'd check the 02 sensor, condition of ignition parts, cat, coolant temp sensor, vacuum lines etc. to get a finger on why you're running so rich.

CAT, as in CATalytic converter. If it's clogged and/or toasted you'd get bad mpg, flat acceleration, poor performance.

 

Simple test is to run engine up to temp (even at highway/city speed) AT NIGHT to see if the catalytic converter is glowing red. If so, and you've never changed it out (~~ $125-175 installed).

I get about 13 MPG on 37s, 7" lift and an Aw4 that I have to manually lock the torque converter ( :doh: ).

 

I assume when I figure out the automatic torque converter lock up I will get slightly better mileage.

 

What gearing are you running?

I smile when I can get more than 200 miles per tank out of my 98 XJ.

All highway is lucky bring 220.

 

20-something tank, 4.0L/3.55's/auto/31-32's with OPTIMISTIC speedo (= speedo geared for 33's).

 

Plenty of power, it just has a drinking problem. :ack:

i run full time 4x4. mine has the 4.0l auto 3:55 gears. i have upgraded fuel injectors, k&n air filter, throttle body spacer, correct speedo gear, magnaflow cat and 2.5 in 2.5 dual out flowsound muffler. i seem to get 200 out of my tank. its seems it could be better but can't really complain. i still wouldnt mind finding out more stuff to do to make it better.

This is my situation too, but with only 2wd.

 

I do my math the old fashioned way. gallons used to mileage.

After you drive 330 or 350 miles, how much gas does it take to fill up?

 

Do you have a fuel leak?

 

First guesses would be O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor (the one for the ECU, not the one for the dash gauge), either could cause the ECU to stay in open loop.

My MJ is a 2.5L 2WD 4spd manual with 3.73's i just figured out ! and it feels like its only getting 9-11mpg !

 

it don't bother me any tho, it Starts, runs,drives, steers and stops. a concept my K2500 6.5 diesel is totally confused by :rotf:

 

but when the 6.5er chose to run it got 19-21mpg, Tho no pulling power but great mileage for a K2500 :wall:

 

The MJ has made a fine runabout replacement for the 6.5er, can't wait to build my J-truck towing Rig replacement for the 6.5er . . .then i'll toss a tranny in it another new starter and send that diesel on its way . . . right after the $5,500 load is paid off :doh:

 

:fs1: paying for a shiny broken truck while driving an ugly beater truck that's paid for :wall: gotta love the American dream eh ? :rotfl2: :rotf: :yes: :D

What kind of mileage should I expect in my 2wd?

 

Assuming stock tires and gearing, cruising 60mph for long distances on flat roads should easily put you over 20mpg on summer gas. Even in winter 20 should be achievable.

 

Before I went to 33" tires, my 87 Comanche got 24mpg on long (>200 miles) highway trips. Easily 21-22 on shorter (50-60 miles) ones as long as I kept my speed down.

 

The 91 and newer HO engines are a different beast altogether. They have a higher torque peak, and seem to get better at higher speeds, but at the same time higher speeds mean more air resistance. I can't get better than 21-22 out of my 7 year newer Cherokee.

9-11 mpg is what my 6000+ pound Suburban used to get around town.
<- that suck's my K2500 gets 19cty-21hwy mpg empty & 13cty-17hwy mpg loaded . . .

 

There's definitely something wrong with your four cylinder.

 

I had the mechanical's inspected "engines sound compression is great no blow by-transmission was sound no unusual slop or play no howling gears - rear end is nice n tight no extra play or howling as well" was my report back.

 

I could have gotten hosed, sure but howling gears ?

 

I don't hear any howling or noise from either gear box, play n slop its a manual i'm shifting the gears every day I personally noticed nothing out of the ordinary actually seems a bit snug to me like a few new truck's i test drove, as for the engine i hear no tick's no rattles i ran it a while pulled the oil cap off while running no smoke no air flow.

 

only thing i might have gotten hosed on is the compression test but with the way it fires right off at -15*F i highly doubt it it ran 20w-50 the first part of winter i now have 10w-40 in it now either oil spun right over n fired up in the negatives . . .

 

Any issue this truck had would have to be electronic if any, plus i said " it feels like 9-11mpg " in my first response ... the exhaust system shot n falling apart leaks every where which is now replaced so it could be better i haven't really checked it non to closely, at a quick estimated guess that is what i came up with . . .
