jiffyjet2
My genuine official 1989 Jeep Comanche Service Manual refers refers to the manual transmissions in the 1989 model as either the BA-10/5 or the AX 5 (which mine has thank goodness) but I notice most on this forum refer to an AX 15. Is that a different gear box than the AX 5? Just curious. Jess
jimoshel
They are different.
freakjeep93
:agree: but to explain more . the ax5 is the little brother of the ax 15 . the 1x 15 goes behind 4.0 L and the ax5 goes behind the 2.5L
Geonovast
To explain even a little further. 1989 was the switchover year from the BA 10/5 to the AX-15 Early 89 4.0 will have a BA 10/5 behind it Later 89 4.0 will have an AX-15 2.5 will have either the AX-4 or AX-5. AX-4 and AX-5 are identical with the exception that the AX-4 is missing the 5th gear.
akamcbird
your "genuine official 1989 Jeep Comanche Service Manual" is stating the two 5 speed manual trannys offered '86-'89, (the ax-15 replaced the ba10-5 in mid '89)... in '89 4.0l came with either the ba10-5 or the ax-15, the 2.5l came with the ax-5. dam lack of words per minute.... you beat me
freakjeep93
now ive got a question . To explain even a little further. 1989 was the switchover year from the BA 10/5 to the AX-15 Early 89 4.0 will have a BA 10/5 behind it Later 89 4.0 will have an AX-15 2.5 will have either the AX-4 or AX-5. AX-4 and AX-5 are identical with the exception that the AX-4 is missing the 5th gear. does that mean the gears n a ax4 are higher so you can cruise at highway speed or is the gearing identical to the ax5 exept for no 5th
Geonovast
AX-4 and AX-5 are identical with the exception that the AX-4 is missing the 5th gear. Generally the AX-4 received 3.55 gearing in the axles, and AX-5 received 4.10 gearing. AX-5 w/ 4.10 had better acceleration and overall power in the lower gears, but the top end ratio somewhat evened out between the 2. AX-4: 3.55(axle) x 1(4th gear) = 3.55:1 AX-5: 4.10(axle) x 0.85(5th gear) = 3.485:
jimoshel
Now I've got a question.I could look it up myself but I'm to lazy. If you're looking for a AX15 for a swap. or whatever reason. In what other models and years should you, I, me look at?
Geonovast
AX-15 was used... mid 89-99 XJ mid 89-92 MJ mid 89-95 YJ 97-99 TJ 93 ZJ It may have been used longer in the TJ, not 100% on that.

jimoshel
Wasn't it also used in the Dakotas?
Geonovast
Yes it was. Even behind the 2.5 in the Dak 93(I think) and up.

Pete M
Wasn't it also used in the Dakotas? and in some Japanese makes too. though I'm not entirely sure of the differences.
Geonovast
Some Toyotas received the R151, which is a very close cousin to the AX-15. There's also some cousins to the AX-5, most of which are not interchageable, however I believe the W58 can be used to replace an AX-4/5 if you swap in an AX-4/5 input shaft. RLCollins
Which year and model AX-15 uses and external clutch slave cylinder? :hmm:
Pete M
I believe the external AX-15 arrived in mid-
Geonovast
I thought it was mid 93 :hmm: Definitely somewhere between the beginning on the 93 model year and the 94 model year.
dasbulliwagen
Another trans to consider would be the NV 3550. Though I can't tell you at the moment which vehicles to look at as donors. It is a much smoother trans than the AX models, but will also be more costly to find used.
Geonovast
NV3550 is certainly an option... but unless you have a specifc reason to need the extra strength, AX-15(IMO) is the better way to go. More plentiful, cheaper, and a little less work to get in. They were the 5 speed behind the 4.0 in 00/01 XJs. From what I understand, finding a 5 speed in those years is not an easy thing to do. RLCollins
How do you tell the difference between an AX-4 or 5 and an AX-15? I saw an 1996 2.5 4 cylinder XJ in the bone yard this morning with a stick, I don't know which tranny it is. IIRC an AX-15 has a center piece added in the middle of the housing, but what about an AX-4 or 5 what is the difference? Also the external slave cylinder IIRC started in 1993 is this true? :hmm:

Pete M
yup. in Jeeps the AX-5 is a 2.5/2.8 trans, the AX-15 is a 4.0 trans.
Geonovast
But for a cursory glance, since the AX-4/5 and AX-15 look similar, the AX-4/5 has a steel midplate, while the X-15 has an aluminum one. AX-4/5: AX-15:
RLCollins
I want to Thank eveyone for their knowledge, and each one of you for your personal input, I will be going to the boneyard with a magnet. :D :USAflag: Does anyone have a picture of a external slave clutch cylinder on an AX-15?
