A stock AMC J20 rear end ??

Recommended Posts

I have a chance to get my hands on a AMC j20 4.10 geared comanche rear end !!

I haven't ever even seen one of these . the guy thats selling it says its better than my dana 44 ??

What would it take to match the gearing on my dana 30 front . Is that possible or even a good idea ??

I heard the J20 rear end was used on 4 cyl. comanches . Its still sprung under and everything looks like it will

bolt right up .

Thats what I thought ! Isn't the 44 easy to find replacement parts for , long term !!

I have no idea of the splines. My dana 44 was out of a 89 xj W / towing pack. I thought it was stock at first, but after

more inspection , I found the mounts had orig. been sprung over .

The C20 is weaker than the D44. The ring gear is larger making it stronger but the housing is narrower and the tubes are smaller, leading to more flex and breaking of shafts. The housing can be re inforced by welding and gusseting but unless there is a compelling reason to use a C20 why bother?

Wait -

Are you asking about an AMC Model 20 axle for an MJ, or about an axle out of a full-size J20 pickup? A Comanche Model 20 axle is about equal in strength to the Dana 44. The axle out of a J20 is going to be a different width and have 6-bolt hubs. Not a bolt-in conversion.

Actually the argument , discussion, of strength on some parts gets a little snerdy at times. Anything can be broken. The common knowledge is the frog BA is weak, therefore junk. So how do you explain the the fact I have a '88 XJ with 290K miles and a BA10.on it still goin strong? OK I also have a '87 XJ with 134K with a busted BA. The point is yes some parts are weaker, stronger than others but unless there is some special reason for their use don't be afraid of a 'weak' part. Just don't abuse it. Givin a choice yes, use the stronger piece. Just don't unreasonably reject a weak one.Climbing off soap box. soapbox.gif

Well, they are about equal strength... So I guess that thing to say is if its a good deal, pick it up. Who knows... Usually we all end up with more than one truck, and that could be a replacement axle for your 2nd MJ... Or, if its a good deal, pick it up and sit on it, who knows when a fellow comanche'r might be looking for one.

id just rebuild the 44

But if it blows up.......... :shake:

44s are not that rare. I can probably send you 5 right now with 5 calls. Everyone is asking $300 although you will have to probably have to weld the perches and shock mounts on.

Dana 44 aftermarket support is amazing for the XJ/MJ D44s. If in the odd chance something goes bad, getting parts (or even a housing) will be easy.

I just wanted to let you know that your Comanche couldn't have came stock with a D44 anyways. There were no shortbed Comanches that came stock with a D44. The D44 came stock under the Metric Ton Comanches and all Metric Ton Comanches are longbeds. I hope this info helps.

Sorry, but that's not correct. The Metric Ton package wasn't offered on the shortbeds, but the D44 axle came with other packages. I have an '87 shortbed that I bought from the original owner's daughter. It's all stock, and it has a Dana 44 rear axle -- with Trac-Lok.

Thanks for playing. Nah, that is a common belief, that ONLY metric ton MJ's came with D44's, but that is untrue. It was a selectable option, even in shortbed trucks, and often found its way on to the shortbeds in the form of towing packages. There are actually a few members here who have SWB MJ's and D44's from factory. They seem to be even more prevalent in the later years '91-'92, possibly because Chrysler was burning up stock of them.

The guy wants 500.00 cold !! I don't know if thats worth it ? It looks to be in the same condition mine is in , ( needing rebuilt )

so I think I'll stick w/ the xj d 44 .

I've bought complete XJ's with both 44 and 20 and drove them home for less than $500. Prices vary around the country but in this area a good D44 can be picked up for less than $100. Same for the C20.
