DJM/78
So this weekend , I was washing my door panels wile servicing my door hinges and made a big mistake. I had pulled some parts for paint and was using a paint prep spray, when I grabbed the wrong can sitting right next to the prep spray , clearly marked , " Gum out , carb & choke cleaner " , and sprayed the bottom of the door panel . Instantly realizing my mistake , I felled profanities whilst franticly looking for my rags . when I wiped the surface , I noticed a bleach - spot where the chemical stayed on the surface . However staining the surface. I decided to do the whole door panel to match. Wiped it all clean and then soaked them in Formula 2001 protectant. Took about 15 years of oil , grease and paint off . As bad as it sounds , It looks great !!! Before : After:

DJM/78
I don't , but the product brand was Gum-out , Carb & Choke cleaner . White can , red label , just like my prep spray . I believe GUM-OUT products are sold in all auto parts stores everywhere . I bet there are other carb. cleaners with the same chemicals. Spray it on and curse profanities , let sit for about , 5-10 sec. , and wipe clean . Repeat until desired blend of color match . Soak in w/ some kind of vinyl or plastic protectant . This only worked on my grey interior . I don't have the balls to try on anything else . :fool: Dave M.

whowey
Came out very good looking.... But be VERY careful with gumout carb cleaner... It will peel the paint off of things.. especially ones you don't want the paint peeled off of.
DJM/78
Oh ' yeah" , :agree: Not only did it take paint and stain off , It instantly liquified the factory coating on the panels . leaving an almost brand new surface , or better in my opinion . However you can't let it soak , wipe after 5- 10 seconds . It bleached the surface about two shades brighter . I know that stuffs nasty , be quick to wipe it up . :shake:

avnsteve
and curse profanities , Dave M. is this a really critical step in the process? I'm just trying to be sure i do it right...
DJM/78
:rotfl2: Yeah , I'm just going step by step on what worked for me . I think the cursing , helps speed up the process . Brake cleaner works the same . Almost the same chemicals . smells Identical . Keep in mind , my door panels had stain and paint all over the door . Looked like willy didn't make it to the outhouse . :ack: Dave M.
