bellhousing questions.

Recommended Posts

you literally cannot put an ax5 behind a 4.0. this subject has been covered many times. it's impossible with the available bellhousings, and it's far from desireable...the transmission is a light duty transmission. it's threshold is less than 110hp, if that.

your option is an ax15. a ba10/5 should be tossed right out the damn window...they're a band-aid transmission meant to get you by.

any jeep 4.0 5 speed from 90 on has an ax15.

Not entirely. After 99 the NV3550 was put in and some Wranglers 05+ got the NSG 370 6 speed, but IMO it's not really worth the hassle.

ok. how many people realistically will EVER have an xj with an nv3550?...there were not many 5 speed xj's made between 99 and 01. I discount that entirely because I know I probably won't ever have one lol.

but touche....any jeep from 90 to 98 with a 5 speed and 4.0 should be ax15.

But if you're talking XJs (which we were), the NVG 3550 wasn't used until the 2000 model year. And Jeep only made an extremely limited run of the 5-speeds at the very end of the 2000 production run. I have one. According to my dealer, it's the only 5-speed 4.0L Cherokee in all of New England. It was on order for something like 8 or 9 months. The factory kept delaying production, I think hoping that those of us who had them on order would get tired of waiting and cancel the orders. Some of us held out, though, and I finally got my 2000 XJ 5-speed.

So for Cherokees, the AX-15 is found in late 89 through 1999 Cherokees. But the early ones still had the infernal slave cylinder. Best choice, if you have a choice, is 1994 through 1999 so you get the external slave. However ... free is a very good price -- if it runs. There's gotta be a reason why it was abandoned.

that's why I throw the nvg 3550 out the window...I probably won't see (or at least own) one ever. they're almost as rare as a comanche diesel here in the states.

yes, 94-99 is the best choice.

ones is abandoned because it did about 5 barrel rolls down the highway and te guy who was gunna fix it died. the other wsa abandoned because the PO were the type of ppl wo bought a 500$ car ran it untill it woudnt pass inspection then drove it into the woods and left it there. in th ewood behind their old place there is a xi a 4 door land cruiser and a dodge k car

what do you guys recommend for a good reliable 5 speed or 4 speed that will almost bolt right in. ( a little mod )

stickshifts?

for the 4.0 : AX-15 : late 89-99

for the 2.5 : AX-5 : all years

the engines have different bolt patterns

Actually, in XJ 84/85 could have a T4 or T5 as an option (tow package) I've only seen 2.

T5 is also a possible swap on the 6 (had one in my '83 J10. Not strong enough for a big truck!)

I now have a T18A/NP208 in my '82 Honcho I'm pulling to swap in a 304/AX-15 (till I can get a Dodge NV6550 for towing my 5th wheel)

in cherokees and comanches it was actually a matter of running out of ax4's/ax5's that resulted in the T4/T5 being installed.
