Battery Cable Question

Recommended Posts

Lately the volt gauge reading has been spending a lot more time at 9 volts than it ever has before. Also, when I turn the heat on high, it always drops the volt meter down to 9. Lastly, it will ocasionally have a unsteady idle.

I suspect the 20 year old battery cables. Has anyone experienced this before?

If it is the cables, has anyone ordered the factory cables (part 56002286) from http://www.wholesalemopar.com/parts_catalog.html

Yup, it looks like it must be the alternator...

Multimeter readings at battery:

Engine off: 12.25

Engine running (accesories off): 12.3

Engine running (accesories on): 11.8

Anyone have any suppliers to stay away from? I was going to head down to Advanced Auto Parts.

FWIW I would recommend that you inspect the battery cables carefully. id suspect that after 20 yrs you are running thin on the insulation on them. There are some stories with pics about the cables and would suggest that you look at them. if they need replacement and i would suspect that they do if they are the original ones. I would obtain at a minimum 2 gauge cable set. it is also known that there is a web site that can provide a 1 gauge cable setup. again a bit of research here will find you some good helpful ideas. as for the alternator i would check that as well but first the cables i would hate to fry something that i should have looked over when needed too. Hope this helps

$300 for an alternator? I have replaced mine a few times and its always been less than or right around $100 for one. I have bought them at Autozone and Murrays/Oreilly's and they were never more than $100.

I would also check your grounds, my volt gauge reads 9-10volts. I hooked up an aftermarket gauge and it reads 14 at all times.

also I'm basing this off an alternator for a 99 s 10 somewhere around 300

That's more typical of the newer vehicles. Our old Jeeps use a old style Chevy alt that is wicked common and so is pretty cheap.

Also, I'd go for the 100 amp version if possible. :brows:
