Let's Play, "Why won't my MJ Start"....

Recommended Posts

Go to drive the MJ for first time in a few days... it's been raining pretty good for a couple days and had been pretty cold (by CA standards, Under 30degrees) a few nights ago...

Turns over like normal, and keeps turning and turning and turning, but never starts. Tried a couple times, assumed I flooded it, swore at it, and got in my TJ to head to my appointment.

I replaced the Battery a couple weeks ago since the old one finally pooped out. But since I got it all smogged and stuff and my interior put back in a couple weeks ago, and before it got cold, I had been driving it every day, no issues whatsoever and it had actually been "fun" to drive again.

Thoughts? :wall:

If I had to bet I would say CPS on the bellhousing. Check for fuel pressure at the rail, and check for spark at a plug. If there is no spark, odds are its a CPS, I think I have replaced mine 4 times over the last 10 years.

I would start by looking at the igniton resister gizmo on the drivers right side under the hood.

Then I would look to see if there really is any spark coming to the plugs. Could be your igniton wires are el bunko.

Gotta wait till it stops raining to do anything...Also as another data point, I did replace the fuel rail and injectors a month ago or whatever, but it's since been working fine...

I'm putting money on the CPS as well....try unplugging/replugging it and see if it fires.

If not, go back and start with the basics (fuel, spark, compression).

As soon as I figure out where that plug might be and won't get wet doing so, I'll give it a try... Maybe I can get help pushing the rig up the hill into my garage.

Ok, slight update... I went wheeling in the Mud with my Club in the TJ yesterday, so didn't look any more at the MJ...here is a pic of my little bit of mud for anyone that cares...

img5258v.jpg

Anyhow, tried a couple more times to start the MJ over the past 2 days with no luck... I just now went out with the intention to try to push into my driveway and then winch into my garage since my driveway is too steep to try to push without a few helpers (which I didn't have)... anyhow I pulled the e-brake and was not in gear and started to roll it a little bit backwards... I realized that the steering would be locked and I wouldn't be able to crank the wheels to get the nose pointed towards my garage. Anyhow, long story short, I stuck the key in, while standing outside (and obviously not hitting the clutch) turned the key and it fired right up with NO hesitation WHAT-SO-EVER...Just started like it was new.

So I at least pulled it in the garage now...it's still pretty wet from the rain we've gotten over the past few days, and I have kid duty, so won't have much time to look real close tonight.

Does the fact that it fired right up (out of gear with no clutch) mean anything in the troubleshooting process, or if it was the CPS, it could have just been a random deal that it failed 5 or 6 times in a row and then worked once?

I'm assuming this is the CPS Plug?

Wire looks good all the way down to the bell-housing and the CPS, no melty or anything getting to close to the manifold. Plugged and unplugged...looks like a nice clean connection. I can't try to fire it up until tomorrow AM, but see my previous post about starting W/O clutch vs. with...coincidence?

sounds like coincidence to me. :dunno: I've failed to get my grandmother's Taurus running for a couple months now (she can't actually drive so it really hasn't been a priority). then, on the day I was pulling the battery charger out of it (she sold the car and I wanted my charger back), I figured what-the-hell and tried to start it. fired right up. :fs1: I hate that car.

I gotta say coincidence as well......I know my TJ has a clutch interlock (which I disabled with a 20A fuse in the auto TRANS slot on the fuse panel ;) ) but there's no such technology on our MJ's.

You might try rerouting that CPS wiring (looks like it's kind of tight/pulled..) Just make sure it can't/won't touch the exhaust manifold and burn or melt.

Well it just fired up... Now I just can't trust it!!!

I have that "trust" issue with my 97 caravan. It'll die anytime it feels like it. I've read (thank you internet!) that there are a half dozen different potential causes for the exact same symptoms. All I can do is fix them all (starting with the easiest) and maybe the van will behave itself. :dunno: It sucks for sure, 'cause that trust is hard to earn back. :(

The Libby is Dad's. The 97 van is technically not mine, but it's mine to care for. And for all those keeping track, Mom has an '08 Caravan, dad has an 83 Z-28 and I also own half an XJ. All of them but the Libby and 08 van sit still with minimal insurance in order to conserve cash.

well, now that we all have Pete's insurance and financial position straight, how about back to my thread...

I drove the MJ to work today, so a few starts between drive to work, lunch, grocery store after work and then home with no issues. I guess I'll call it a fluke, maybe it was po'ed that I hadn't driven in a week or more and I had been spending more time with the TJ... much like a woman, needs the appropriate amount of quality time and attention to keep it happy... I'm not sure if the TJ or the MJ is the "mistress" :dunno:

As much as I like to go along with thinking it was coincidence and a fluke, I'd much rather think that SOMETHING is still wrong. when you were under the hood did you mess around with the CPS any, jiggle the wires at all? That might be your answer right there...?

Something kept it from starting... :???:

it costs about $30 per year per vehicle for fire/theft.

Wade have you unplugged the CPS yet? Any corrosion inside? Checked all the wire connections throughout the ignition system? I had a hard-start issue in the 86 that was simply corrosion in the positive wire on the ign coil.

Yah, I unplugged the CPS...connections looked like new...(or what I assume it looked like new, since that was 20years ago)
