hugh
Hi, I am pretty new to this site and I have a couple of questions. Please bear with me, it might be a bit of a long post. First off, I currently have a 98 XJ on 35 bfg,s, it has a 6 1/2 iron rock lift kit which is a 3 link front and obviously leaf rear. Lots of other upgrades like the MORE engine and motor mounts, 4.56 gears and rear detroit locker. I have always liked the commanche trucks and now have the chance to pick up a couple of them. One is an 89 4 liter with a standard, not sure about the other. The plan is once I acquire one of them is to strip it down over the winter to check for the usual rust etc and repair all that. Then i was thinking gut my 98 and put all the good bits into the commanche. Has anyone here put a XJ rear end under an MJ using the complete setup? I know the springs are different lengths and one is spring over vs spring under but the chrysler 8.25 I have has been rebuilt plus it has the detroit in it. We have gov,t insurance here in Manitoba and the difference in insurance from the XJ to the MJ is about $600 a year less so in the first year alone it pays for itself. Just a small bonus plus I get a cool MJ.
Red 1989 MJ
First of all, Welcome to CC. The 1989 MJ is a RENIX(1986-1990), they have differents sensors and computer than the earlier HO 4.0L. Good luck with your project.
hugh
I realize the injection systems are different, that,s why a complete swap of engine, electrical etc would be in order. I have already done everything to my xj to make 35,s fit. What I wanted to know if if was possible to adapt the rear diff from from the xj to the mj. If I decide to go ahead with this project well then this question will become unnecessary but there is no need to re - invent the wheel if it,s been done already. Anyone? Pete M
simply cut off the XJ perches and weld some on in the proper MJ location. MJ perches are closer together than XJ stuff, so you can't just bolt it up.
hugh
Well it starts, I made a deal with a friend who owns about 5 or 6 commanches. When it warms up in a couple of months I get a commanche with the 2.8 long bed, 100.000 miles.

Cdn Glenwood
Hey Hugh, Hello from Transcona  There is a nice 89 4.0L 4wd swb w/grey interior at the MPI salvage auction this Wednesday Dec16. It has a crunchy font bumper but looks good otherwise. Last Wednesday a 2wd 2.5l longbox sold for $100.
